What is the OT's opinion on solar panels used to cut energy costs?

Is it worth it?

There's a thread on it. Good luck searching.

if I had to guess, I'd say the OT thinks it's trashy

It's getting closer and closer to being worth it... it all depends on your situation though. Where you can put them (facing south); your current energy use; age of house; government subs

It looks kind of stupid but it's definitely not trashy, shite's expensive.

The technology is getting better and better. I really think the main thing holding it back is the energy companies. Imagine if we built every new house with panels and started putting energy into the system. Maybe we could export energy but these companies are protecting themselves.

My neighbor got it and she's throwing a party with the contractor next weekend to discuss the results 4 months in. So far her monthly payment have been zero or a few bucks back. She expects to break even in 14 years.

I would really like to have them on our "forever" house. Whenever it is that we build it.

Sounds about right.

Like Captain said, I'm going to look into it in 5 years when I build our "final" home.

This is one of those times when I would be ok with our gov't stepping in and requiring all new builds to have them.

If it takes 15 years to break even, not worth it.

When cost comes down to where it only takes like 5 years to break even, maybe.

Aren't there some companies that will "lease" them to you for around $50/month?

Which will be right about the time her roof will need shingles, and/or the panels will need replacing.

So, no, she wont break even in 14 years (not even considering tying up that much $$$, and not investing it)

Until battery storage becomes more effective, solar panels is not economically feasible

Yes, you can finance it. in fact LA gives you $12,500 back in tax credits for the 1st $25K you spend. With the $7500 federal tax credit you're looking at $5000 system. LA has the top solar tax credit program in the nation. Act quick bc it won't be around past 2016

Put 'em on your double-wide. They look like shite, are fragile, create a gazillion holes in your roof and the pay back is way long.

Spray foam insulation in at least your attic (if not the walls too) and heat-pump water heater(s). Frick the solar panels.

Walker, LA trailer trashish.

O-T thumbs down.

It won't happen because energy companies would lobby too hard against it... but it would be worthwhile in theory. It would cut greenhouse emissions, help push the technology further forward, make us more energy dependent, and create some jobs in that sector.
