The original edition starts at $500 used on Amazon, the 2003 expanded edition starts at $700 and quickly goes up from there (if ever there was a book that needs to be reprinted, this is it).
Here are a few pictures and text clippings from the book (Brian Shul was not only a badass pilot but he was an excellent photographer as well).

Awesome read. The book should definitely be reprinted.

Great thread I'd like to look at this book but it's definitely too pricey for me

Many Thanks to the OP and NewIberiaHaircut.
I saw one of these at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, AZ.

The heat tiles have large gaps between them and the friction from high speed flying heats them up and expands them to make a seamless heat shield.

L.A. To D.C. in an hour and four minutes! Does anyone know if this includes takeoff and landing, or is the aircraft already at altitude and cruising at Mach 3?
Also, can anyone recommend a good book on the Skunkworks in general and/or Kelly Johnson in particular?

The book titled "Skunkworks" by
Ben R. Rich Leo Janos is very good and a large part of it is focused on Kelly Johnson.

Yes, it was set according to FAI international standards which mean from the beginning of the takeoff roll to touchdown.

It's amazing that they could takeoff, cross the continent, and then land in less than 65 minutes.
