So, the only recorded F6 tornado hit Louisiana and Mississippi in 1840?

The Great Natchez Tornado

quote:

The storm is estimated today to have been an F6, the highest rating a tornado can be, causing massive destruction with winds 319-379 mph.

It's crazy how low journalistic standards were back then.

Curious as to how they know this.

Wonder how they could have measured the wind speeds back then

I wonder how they came up with those wind speeds. I can't imagine seeing a mile wide tornado heading towards me. I would have been on my horse Seabiscuit leaving a trail of bricks I shite out.

Yeah I highly doubt the accuracy of the wind speeds. Seems the terrain would make it highly unlikely.

I would have to say by studying damaged structure. Samples of damaged things etc.

What is sad is they didn't even count the slaves in the dead, which was estimated to be in the hundreds.

That estimate is 3/5 of the actual total

F6?

No.

You can't do that.

You can't retroactively upgrade a tornado like that. We have reliable scientific data on tornados for 50 or 60 years and there has been nothing warranting an F6. I have a hard time believing any tornados in the years previous were stronger.

The only exception is the Tri-State Tornado. It is the only tornado that we don't have a comparable template for in the years that we have measurables.

Outside of Tri-State, I believe every tornado that is documented is comparable to one we have had since we had good data.

This. We can't go back and just say it would have been an F6 on our current scale. What would even constitute an F6 over an F5?
