The mother of the Cobb County man shot dead by a Smyrna cop said Wednesday she was disgusted to learn that officer, Sgt. Kenneth Owens, had been promoted to lieutenant.

“These people are not taking us seriously,” Felicia Thomas told V-103. “They are laughing at us. America is promoting police officers who are killing our children.”

Nicholas Thomas, 23, was working at the Goodyear on Cumberland Parkway last March when Smyrna and Cobb County officers arrived at the tire store to serve a warrant for his arrest on a probation violation. After Thomas saw the officers, he tried to flee in a customer’s Maserati, according to police.

Officers said Thomas tried to run them over with the vehicle, prompting Owens to fire multiple shots. Thomas, shot in the back, died at the scene near Cumberland Mall. Owens was the only officer to fire his gun.

Can someone ask her to elaborate on what the cop should have done in that situation instead of acting with regard to the safety of the general public?

The kid wasn't running from the cops, that day was the last day to register for Community College classes that were about to start. He was trying to make it to the registrars office before closing time.

Considering he was shot in the back the cop saying he feared for his life is pretty much a lie.

You don't think he could have been reversing the car into them when he was shot? Or maybe the cop jumped out off the way and died broadside? Don't be so closed minded about it.

Allegedly, he tried to run them over. Therefore, in this alleged scenario, it's not unrealistic to believe shots were fired to the back of the vehicle once it were to pass.

Yeah, the cop who shot him was protecting another officer who was in danger.

Deserved a promotion, I think.

logical conclusion considering the "victim" was being arrested for a probation violation and had just stolen a car
