Smoke Detector HookupsPosted by SM6 on 12/6/12 at 8:20 am
Ok, dumb question here but I need to replace my smoke detector because I am an idiot and hit it by mistake cracking it. Are the connections all the same across brands and what not? The ceiling wired with a female the pronged receiver. I just want to buy one off the internet. Can I just go with whatever I find on Amazon? Thanks!

If its hard wired into the house with a battery back up connected to an alarm company you should get the brand the company sells maybe even calling them for a replacement. if if it just screws into a bracket that's mounted on the ceiling with just a battery you're good with any replacement.
The wiring in the house will support any detector. It is the same electricity no matter which way you do it. I smashed mine too and haven't looked back since. Other than having to pick up the pieces from the ground, it has been a seemless transition

The poster who made the point about a central alarm system that is monitored by an outside company (ADT for example) was right. There's a computer somewhere supporting the peripheral devices on the system and that makes replacing the broken detector with a random unit a potential problem.
