Didn't realized they had flipped over that quickly.

Pretty dumb of him to land in a snow cover field rather than on one of the many paved roads he was flying over early in the video.

I thought all devices with an on/off switch had to be in the off position once below 10,000 feet.

He had no carb heater??

It looks like a 172?

That should have been checked in the run-up before flight.

All kinds of small pilot mistakes.

That pilot sucks. Why didn't he trim the plane? No 30* of flaps? the wings weren't iced. He could have shut the engine down and cut off fuel. He landed it bad.

FAA should yank his license.

This, a plane in an emergency has the right of way on US roads. If traffic is light he should have hit a road. I know we are taught to look for roads when flying in the NOLA-E. Then levees as the TACA landing shows, then fields then water.

But he landed it in clean configuration with the engine on. Had there been a fire, they would all be dead because of that mistake.

I was wondering about that, too.

FYI, I was at Michoud the day that TACA landed.
Steel balls flew it right to the ground. Awesome gliding ability.

Maybe overhead utilities would get in the way?

Some of the best piloting ever. "Oh we can't make the airport. We are going to land this 737 on the levee" Then they stripped the interior and flew it off the levee. It's now a SWA plane.

+10000000

What a shitty fricking pilot. I could have handled that better and I'm a damn student.

I didn't know that plane was still in service.

The pilot went on to become a trainer for TACA, IIRC.
He also only had sight in one eye.

He had the right stuff and then some.

That's the smallest gripe. In an emergency the first thing you do is trim the plane for maximum glide. Then you start enging restart procedures. That plane didn't have the right nose attitude.
Then carb heat? You are constantly turning that on and off as you make throttle adjustments. Under 2k RPM it has to be on. You can tell when it is working. Before you take off in a small plane you always check your carb heat and magnetos in a run-up before taking off.

Now was that malfunctioning? Or did he forget to use it? Then he did not stall the plane into the landing. You want the point of a landing to be at the exact same point that the plane loses its ability to fly(stall) so that the landing is as soft as possible. He plopped it.

A lot of mistakes were made in that video.

Not as bad as the one last year, where the guy flew into the trees rather than setting down. But still bad.

I know people say its hard to do the right thing in an emergency, but that is why you have all the training. It isn't like you just go to the DMV and get a PP license.

It only had 81 hours on the Hobbs when it landed at Michoud.
