The Haynesville Shale slowdown hit Sheveport-Bossier pretty hard. The sequester (which I'm in favor of) also hasn't helped Barksdale. With the new steel mill construction starting as well as natural gas getting back to $4, I see a turn around coming.

suck it, haters

On Monday, German steel tube manufacturer Benteler Group broke ground on a $975 million, two-phase, 1.35 million square foot hot rolling steel tube mill in Shreveport, La.—the second largest capital investment in the U.S. in 2012.

quote:

After evaluating more than 100 sites in 13 states, Benteler executives say they chose North Louisiana in part because of its strong energy sector.

quote:

Benteler also credits Louisiana for a workforce training solution uncommon in manufacturing. State and local governments agreed to fund a $22 million workforce training center, now under construction at Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC) in Bossier City, across the river from Shreveport. The 65,000 sq. ft. BPCC Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology will feature training labs that mimic the Benteler facility now underway, as well as other labs and classrooms meant to help the college expand its advanced manufacturing, construction and energy curricula. Scheduled for completion in May 2015, a few months ahead of the opening of first phase of the steel mill, the training center will be the first stop for Benteler’s 675-person workforce, says Matthias Jaeger, president and CEO of Benteler Steel/Tube.

Just one more thing New Iberia beats Lafayette at.

The list is getting pretty long now.
