Should state colleges cap their tuition and fees?

The rising costs of tuition and fees is nauseating for state universities. My son has been looking around at the University of Illinois, Indiana University and a few private Ohio and Illinois colleges. The cost of state university tuition is surprising.
The rough average I've found is:
In-state resident ~ $11,000
Out of state ~ $30,000
That's not factoring in rent, utilities, food, books, etc.
I've encouraged him to look outside the B1G area, but I just stumbled across the University of Tennessee's tuition (we have family in the Middle Tennessee area). In-state = $10,678 and out of state = $29,000.
Should the government cap" tuition for state colleges? I'm not calling for uniform tuition and fees, but a ceiling on costs?
For example:
In-state cap is $9,500
Out of state cap is $24,000
Excuse typos...on my cell

I think it's the next bubble to burst. Kids can't graduate with a Liberal Arts degree and $150k of student loans to work at Starbucks. It's an unsustainable model.

why, because some people can't afford it?
As long as colleges can/do fill out their incoming enrollment figures with people paying for it, they'll continue to increase.

Thats exactly why I'm asking if they should be capped. State colleges are supposed to be te affordable option.

If they cap tuition they'll have to raise taxes

Have to cover all the free student programs somehow.

Don't need to be capped. They need grant and student loan reforms.

It won't sound very ideologically consistent of me, but I'd support some sort of cap.
The mission of a public state college should be to educate its citizens. Public college's trend of jacking up tuition and fees to a point that many citizens can't afford the education without going into hardship of federal student loans should be a violation of that mission. Or something along those lines, I dunno.
Federal student loan reform should take priority though. That is one of the root issues.

You want to attend college? Pay for it yourself. It is ultimately an investment in yourself. If you incur huge student loans and can not pay them....to bad, you made a bad investment. Personal Responsibility.

The state of higher education in America really isn't that black and white at this point. It is a bit more complex.

Can't afford college? Go to trade school, blue collar work, find a way to make your own way.

And this is the problem.

colleges are a place that people can CHOOSE to attend to get a degree, if they are so inclined. If colleges want to raise tuition by 500% and people still pay it, they'll do it. Colleges won't even reduce their tuition unless it's hurting their bottom line and less and less people apply/get in.
That's like asking if nice fancy restaurants should cap their meal prices.

We're preparing to have a child and I was looking into putting money aside for college savings. Some government website was estimating college expenses for a 4 year public instate university to be $250k.

exactly, no one is forcing you to go to College, no one is forcing you to go out of state or to a more expensive college, etc...

No room for common sense here
