Should people who lie about suicide attempts be committed?

I am acquaintances with a guy who is a bit dramatic. Three times in the last year, not only has he posted on facebook that he was going to attempt suicide, but he has posted pictures of said "attempt" (usually a picture of a slit wrist that it turns out he pulled off of google images). Every time he has done this, concerned friends have called the cops to his house only to find that he is fine and just being moody. The dude is in his 40's. Shouldn't someone be committed to a mental facility for this type of behavior? Serious question.

Not committed to a mental society.... I don't think they're mentally impaired. I think they're obviously seeking attention and chose a really shitty way to do it.

Maybe that's considered mental by some? Good question.

No, they're just looking for attention. So stomp their arse and give them some attention.

Have a similar thing going on in my circles. He doesn't go as far as pictures but he text messages his sister, ex-wife and in general acts like a little bitch. They've sent the cops only to find out he wasn't even home. He definitely needs something. I tend to say an arse whipping won't help.(won't hurt either) At least needs court ordered therapy or something.

Buy him a few bottles tylenol.

Write a note, "take to two ease your pain, take two bottles to end your pain"

Publicly saying "I am going to kill myself." is not "a bit dramatic". It's more than that.

Those nearer to him need to assess his situation. You could talk to them about him .

Usually, as we all know, this type of behavior is not followed up by actual suicide but stranger things have happened.

Like Walt.

The thing is- he posts this shite and then a few hours later he will act like nothing has happened. He gets off on people falling for it. It's weird.

Commitment? Nope.

No overt act to actually harm himself. He needs and I am sure has been evaluated, but if you lie to the evaluator and are convincing they won't commit.

This guy PROBABLY has been kept somewhere 72 hours. But even that's tough to get sometimes.

You're right to be concerned but you have to be "rub shite in your hair crazy" to be kept anywhere for very long.

A buddies ex wife pulled a Whitney Houston. She was found in a tub under STILL water. Somehow she lived. Amazing really. She had called him after about a week. IMO she should have been kept longer. But it's a slippery slope. At a certain point you are warehousing people sanitarium/sanitorium style.
