I'm seeing a lot of old people cause near death accidents.

Especially on I-10.

I am all for it.

They need to learn to drive the posted speed limit.

Not to stop when they have the right of way to let other people in.

And how to park.

You would think at their age they would be in a hurry

I know a couple of old guys who have no business driving. They should be subjected to some physical capacity testing before they're issued a DL renewal. These old coots can barely walk but drive daily.

Honestly, I'm in complete support of requiring annual or biannual driving tests. The only test people take is when they first get their license and that's ridiculous. It's obvious people don't know or forgot the rules of the road. Especially when driving laws change so frequently.

I'd be willing to pay more for it also. More educated drivers on the road can only be a good thing.

Eye sight is the biggest issue. And depth perception.

Yes, but should not be limited to just old people.

I think anyone with multiple violations (accidents, speeding tickets, reckless driving...) over a rolling calendar (3-5 years) should be required to retest their license. And not the BS test they give you to get your license, they need a more extensive test. All I had to do was make 2 U-turns on Chateau and park the car in an empty lot to get my license.

If this was the case when I was racking up tickets, I would have been a much safer driver at a younger age.

I worry about those old guys ability to take quick defensive maneuvers. Their hand/eye/foot coordination is shot. No way could they brake or steer quickly out of a bad situation.

Yes, and I'm just hoping that driver-less cars are available when I am too old to drive.

Honestly, while I see what your intentions are with this, frick no. Imagine having to go to the DMV once a year to have to wait in line for a driving test. Think about how ridiculously long and terrible the experience is now where people merely need to renew a license every 4 years. Now add to that that everyone has to go for a driving test every year or two. Absolutely not. F that to death.

And the people that suck as drivers will pass the stupid test. They passed it when they were 16. They didn't magically get dumber and less competent, that's just how easy it is to pass the test and then have an IGAF attitude about driving on a daily basis. Those people aren't going to change because they have to pass another test. They'll simply pass it again.

When my grandmother was around 80 she had her purse stolen. She was at the point where we were considering taking her car keys away. She was tighter than a tick with her money but her only concern with the stolen purse was the loss of the DL. You guessed it - the state issued her a new one w/o an exam.

I agree with both points.

the tests should be better tailored to the realities of reduced capacities, but such tests do not exist. the whole thing would have to be engineered.

the increased cost of test/renewal would pay for more staffing. It could even be computer based with how far technology has improved.

make the test harder. If you fail a certain number of times, your license isn't renewed and/or you have to wait a number of months to try again
