I work in auto finance and my boss threatened to fire me for joining the occupy movement. I considered suing but then they changed their reasoning because I was "drinking at work".

Talk about a double standard, fricking fascists.

To everyone else. I understand the right to fire issue and as an employee if you value your job you should conduct yourself on and off the clock in a way that doesn't hurt the image of your employer.

This is something a liberal SJW would shut down a city over though. Imagine a guy working at a Christian book store is exosed as a cross dressing homosexual that regularly travels to Tijuana for participation in donkey shows. The first thing the media would do is interview people that say what a good guy he was and how he was knowledgable and helpful in the store.

This topic may be better reserved for the Poli board but was just curious how a blanket "seperation of work and personal life" would be viewed.

Biblical law doesn't cover Mexico bro. And last I checked, Tijuana is still in Mexico.

Uuuuhhh, yeah. If a person was completely against abortion under almost all circumstances and I ran an abortion clinic, I would let her go. Maybe not just can her cruelly, but I would pull her into my office and ask why the hell you worked for an abortion clinic in the first place and it would be a good move for her own mental sanity to get out of here.

Absolutely. Why would an employer want to keep an employee who is against the employer's mission? Pretty easy solution to that issue. If you are against abortion, don't work at an abortion clinic. No one is forced to work there

Exactly. It's like saying should a church hire a militant atheist to work for them. Of course not, and they would never work for a church in the first place.

Mmmm, no. This former employee would be looked as a freak who had sex with animals. Very easily fireable offense there.

FIFY.

Right to work means you can't be forced to join a union as a condition of employment.

So you agree that an employer should be able to fire an employee for what they do on THEIR OWN time?

Most employers can fire employees for any reason at all that doesn't involve a protected class. The employer can fire you if you root for McNeese this weekend. Or if you have red hair, for that matter.

Given the political/legal environment abortion clinics operate in, I wouldn't at all be surprised if they didn't want anti-abortion people working for them. You never know who might be secretly taping something to twist out of context, for example. I could totally understand why they'd want to steer clear.

It should be a subjective decision that's made by the employer. The employee's opinion of the situation is irrelevant.

My company gives me 10 hours on the clock to benefit the community. Next, if I do 50 total in a year I get a free day off. Next if I do 50 at the same place they give the organization a $1500 grant. So no... You work for a shite company.

If it reflects badly on the employer, absolutely.

If I'm an elementary school teacher, I can have sex with three guys in one night if I want and chances are, if I do it in a private setting, my job is safe.

Now, if I do it with my one fiancée but on a dance floor at the local country club, chances are once the parents and administration finds out about it, I'm getting fired.

Both examples are done on "my own time" but one reflects badly on my employer and will cause them a shitton of problems.

It's simple - personal life and professional life collide when the employee themselves are dumb enough to make the personal public.

Yes.

Again, if I sell vaccines Monday through Friday and spend my weekends working with an anti-vax group, I'm likely to get canned.

The doctors I would be calling on would know anything I say as part of my job duties would be a lie because of what I choose to do on my personal time.

You think a police chief would be okay with a narcotics detective who spends his weekends working for an pro-drug activist organization?
