shopping for furniture ( sofa )
Posted by lsubuddy on 4/4/15 at 1:32 pm00
In your opinion, who's the top manufacturer? Quality, comfort, price ?
I've got a couple of stores in Houma, Thibodaux left to check out. Probably gonna hit Baton Rouge also. What stores in Baton Rouge should I check out?

Most furniture is a commodity. Name means nothing.
If you want solid wood construction, you will just have to pay.

I purchased bedroom furniture from Ashley recently. Offer them 80% of their retail price with tax included and go on a week night when they're slow and more eager to make a deal...

Depends on your budget. I like Haverty's.

Name brands?
Bradington-Young. Palliser.
Omnia Leather Furniture.
If you want to go with leather, be aware there are several types of leather.
Full grain leather is the best but its not refined and not as flexible.
Top-grain leather is the next best type. It is more refined and more pliable.
Then there is genuine leather, its decent but not as good as top-grain or full grain.
Then there is bonded leather, which is basically ground up or left-over leather. This is the cheapest.
Price? If you want to go with the top lines, be prepared to send over $1200.

shite, that's nothing. You can drop $5000-$7000 for a couch at a nice store. $1200 is the cost for stuff at like Ashley Furniture.

I'd stay away from Ashley Furniture

Believe me, I have found out how expensive good furniture can be.
It has been several years since I purchased any furniture and to say I have got 'sticker shock' is an understatement.

I looked for a long time for a sofa that I liked and couldn't find a thing. Went to Bassett and designed what I wanted. I've been very happy with it. You can choose the width and depth, the arms, types of seat and back pillows, fabric. It's a lot to look at. I think I spent $3-4K for an L-shaped sectional

All depends on budget

I will probably only spend about a grand on this one. I found a really nice one at landmark, Blue mountain . 95 % of people I hear from hate ashley furniture. My last 3 were Bassett.

Any of you folks negotiating prices? or just going with whatever the sale price is?
FWIW I've never negotiated furniture - usually just wait until the fill-in-the-blank holiday sale

Recently went looking for a nice sectional in BR. Olindes is where we ended up purchasing one at. Now, american factory direct is open directly across from them. They usually have nice stuff

in that price range Landmark is ok. They are good folks- and will stand behind what you purchase. If it needs repair they do it themselves
Keep in mind in your price range you are buying low level furniture.
Even a good lazy boy leather couch will run 3 grand
Flexsteel is better
