My youngest is a HS junior and is just starting his "search" (even though he is likely to end up at LSU like his sister). He goes to a Catholic HS so he is naturally interested in some Catholic colleges. But even those that are considered only slightly above average are 50-60k a year.

How in the hell do so many schools still exist? Look at the northeastern corridor. It is crammed with small liberal arts colleges that cost a fortune. Do people just have that kind of change laying around? Are they maxed out on student loans? Seriously? The numbers are staggering.

Daughter has TOPS and still costs me 10k a year to live. My oldest got a scholly to Bama and he still cost me 3-5k a year. I ain't poor, but I can't imagine paying 60k.

Small scholarships and massive amounts of undergraduate loans.

I went to Valpo on a huge scholarship. My wife went to Tulane similarly

moral of the story: if your kid isn't smart enough to get a scholarship, it's state school for him.

I opened up a financial trust for my kids several years ago.

Each year, I set a designated amount into the trust.

I will put enough in the trust that the 3 of them could go to medical school for free if they choose to.

I have no desire to be dishing out tons of money later in life for college

It's up to them to either pay for college or go in debt. My parents paid for private school K-12. That was plenty.

The University of LSU is as good of an education as any in the state.

Private college in LA is a joke.

They are probably like Harvard and have large endowments for financial aid and almost no one pays full price. 70% of Harvard students receive financial aid, 20% of those pay nothing the rest pay less than $12K a year.

Comparatively few are paying full ride at those colleges. Mostly dumbass legacies whose rich alumni parents are paying for the privilege when their kid wouldn't have gotten in otherwise. If your great grandfather's name is on a building, you're getting in even if your SAT was a negative number. But you're paying the whole bill.

Way back when (in the '70's), Illinois had something called the Illinois Veterans Scholarship. Any Vet from Illinois that came back and resided in the state and went to a school in Illinois had their tuition/fees paid by the state. It didn't matter if it was a state school for undergrad or Med school.....public or private. I certainly took advantage of that and combined with my military college money lived comfortably.

recently went to a presentation from harvard/stanford/penn/georgetown/duke

all are 70k per year for everything.
no performance based (academic)schollys

less than 75k income for parents - free
75-130 - you pay about 25k per year
over 130k income for parents - you are paying it all
