Did you get tired of working in a typical work environment?
Tired of makin someone else rich?
What was it that made you go that route?

I had money in the bank, a niche, and had the right connections.

sometimes you need the trees taken away so you can see the forest

I knew I could do it better than anyone else in the South.
I had $21K in the bank (7 months living expenses) and I figured I could take a shot for six months.
That was 18 years ago.
Good Luck.

My boss of 9 years and basically gave me his biz when he retired. Best thing that ever happened to me. It would be difficult to ever go back to working for someone again.

You can do it without money if your niche and connections are top notch and you know how to write a contract.

The money in the bank was to get me though the first year when I wasn't taking a paycheck and putting everything I made back into the company. That's how it's done, son

I did self employed route after the Army.
Now I'm on staff at a university hospital and have a side business.
It's not all sunshine and roses to be self employed. When you don't work, you don't make money. All benefits paid by YOU.

A true entrepreneur never works for free. I'm just waiting on the go ahead from my connections, and I'll be out on my own.

No one said I was working for free. You should brush up on your comprehension skills before you leave the nest kiddo. It's a mean mean world out there. I'd hate for you to misinterpret a contract and all of a sudden find yourself in a lawsuit without a pot to piss in.

You said you lived on money in the bank and didn't take a paycheck for a year to build your business.
Good for you.
It doesn't have to be that way for everyone else.

So you've never really been out on your own?

Really, probably ever since I was a kid. I had a lot of different jobs growing up,(most great, a couple bad), and they all made me want to be my own boss.
Fortunately, for me, it has finally paid off recently after years of hard work with hardly anything to show for it.
My friend from high,(who also owns a couple small businesses), both agreed the other day that if someone would ask us if we would recommend opening a business in the current economic climate we would say hell no in a heartbeat.
Again, I've been extremely fortunate and count my blessings everyday, but damn, it's been tough.

I'd go into further detail, but the niche I would work in would be very lucrative and the operating cost would be minimal.
