I broke 80 one time. Next day I got back into my comfort zone and shot 92.

I'm pretty sure that's normal, odd question from you though.

I think achieving scratch for us is about as hard as a guy who is scratch working and getting a tour card.

Fun to dream though. I played my balls off for stretches and only shot a handful of 83-84's.

I've gotten to about a 4, but I'm at a 10ish now.

My advice:
- short game, short game, short game
- minimize blow ups by mapping out your shots on a hole before you play it and not being over aggressive with club selection. Smart and safe will lower your scores.
- play a lot and if the course is empty play several balls for shots you're uncomfortable with
- short game, short game, short game

A lot of people say that they are scratch golfers but that perctage is actually pretty low. Most of the "good" golfers I know are bogey/par kind of players, if they are playing honestly and from the tips. The majority people could only hope to be that good.

1) Divorcce your wife
2) Abandon your kids

3) Spend all of the time you would have with them and hit the range

= Scratch.

Good luck!

Used to be scratch, now a 6-7. Like others said, short game is key. Most decent golfers are close to the green in regulation, but a bad chip, missed putt, etc leads to bogeys.

Also, find a reliable tee shot. If you fade the ball, play the fade. It's hard if you're missing it right and left.

I know a guy who was a scratch golfer for a long time. I think he played to some extent at least 5 days a week.

You started as a 9 handicap? Wtf? Lol still impressive for a 16 year old.

I'm 28. Played golf in high school and would occasionally shoot 80 or break 40 on a front or back nine, but never quite broke 80 on a full 18.

You may have been a 9 handicap, too. Handicap only takes your 10 lowest scores out of your last 20 rounds. So, if you break 80 a few times, have a couple of low 80s rounds you may be a 9 or lower, even if you have 12 rounds in the 90s. Even as a 6.5 (just checked and it went up from 6.0) I have 6 scorable rounds in the 80s.

Start tracking your rounds by paying attention to fairways hit, greens hit, penalty strokes, number of putts, scrambling, and feet of putts made. You should be able to then deduce where you have the biggest opportunity to drastically improve your scores. If you are like most people, it will be in the short game. Spend 1/3 the time on the range that you do on the practice green. And practice with a purpose...some kind of goal. Don't just mindlessly hit balls. Get to be a 4 or 5 and then figure out if the time investment is worth getting to scratch. I've met older guys who were scratch and competed to win club championships and they regretted how much time they spent golfing and wish they had more time with their families.

a 6.0, on two rounds a year? You may be pulling from rounds 10 years ago

Congrats, this might be the most outlandish claim ever in TD history. I'm still trying to wrap my head around someone claiming to have a better handicap than half of the guys on the PGA Tour.

Every PGA Tour player is better than +5 at their home course ...

Im about a 12 right now but working hard to get into single digits

ETA 6.5 now. First time I have checked it in a while.

I don't find it outlandish at all. He didn't claim that he could shoot -5 on average on PGA set up courses. His handicap is based off of playing his usual course that he knows forwards and backwards, and probably would play at far less distance than the PGA guys. The PGA guys would probably have something like a +8 handicap under similar circumstances.

Also, when figuring your handicap you throw out your lowest scores and only your best rounds get counted. Those bad days don't even exist as far as your handicap is concerned.
