because someone thought a student was referring to persons of color when he said "brownies," instead of you know, the baked good.

LINK

It isn't cleared what he actually said—the school, William P. Tatem Elementary, has not returned my request for comment. But a local news story suggests that he did not use the word "brownies" to refer to persons of color. He was actually referring to the chocolate baked good, according to his parents. Given that he made the statement during a class party—it was the last day of school—this explanation makes sense.

The teacher couldn't do her own investigation to figure this out?

That's insane. And look at this from your article....

quote:

The incident, which has sparked outrage among some parents, was one of several in the last month when Collingswood police have been called to look into school incidents that parents think hardly merit criminal investigation. Superintendent Scott Oswald estimated that on some occasions over the last month, officers may have been called to as many as five incidents per day in the district of 1,875 students."

This school system is calling the fricking cops up to five times PER DAY?!?

Apparently the directive to call the police over even minor incidents comes from the top down. In a meeting in May, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office directed school officials and police to involve law enforcement in issues “as minor as a simple name-calling incident that the school would typically handle internally.” They were also told to report “just about every incident” to the New Jersey Division of Child Protection.

Parents in the district are understandably pissed and have been lobbying the mayor to end this ridiculously wasteful over-policing. Other parents want to change schools, having lost faith in the school’s administrators.

The Nj educational system is a total cluster.

It's literally a low security prison system.

Teacher's union said she doesn't have to do that.

and I am by no means defending public education in Mississippi and Louisiana, but we aren't at this level. Something like 80% of Chicago 8th graders can't read and we're last in the country in education?

Even if he was talking about black folks, calling the cops is ridiculous.

This is the problem. Teachers and administrators need to stop being inbred morons and actually make good judgment calls.

Even if the kid was referring to persons of color, why on earth do you call the police in that situation? Beyond ridiculous.

Article I read indicated that the "racist" student is actually Brazilian, and this is only third grade. Student had to stay home from the last day of school.

You do realize every single one of those "Such and such state is ___th in ----" lists are absolute bullshite? Especially education. Those lists are put out by education unions and lobby groups. They are almost always based on levels of spending. As if education in this country is underfunded. Yet, there are idiots who actually believe more money poured into the education rat hole will improve anything.

1)It's a public school, so any opportunity the admin has to pass the buck, it's gone.
2)It's Camden, NJ- the same Camden that Philly has to shut down its bridge at night to keep the gangbangers on their side of the river.
3)Short of weapons being involved or drugs being seize I can't think of a good reason for school admins to call the popo.

Sounds like a HUGE misallocation of funds and time management. What else could the police be doing instead of talking to little Johnny because he called Susie a stupid-head. Then the parents get investigated because the DCS gets involved.

I grew up in the country in southeast Montgomery County.

I rode the bus with majority black folk when I was in the 1st grade.

One day they were all making fun of me for one reason or another, and I straight up called everyone on the bus a bunch of "n words."

Not my proudest moment obviously, but I was like 6 years old and I'd simply heard the word before applied to people of color.

Didn't get child protective services called. Hell, I don't think I got in trouble at all. I don't even remember anyone on the bus being that offended. Weird.
