First off this is a "spinoff" of the thread about the trooper who was airlifted after being struck while assisting a motorist. I thought it might be in poor taste to put "spinoff" in the thread title.

Thoughts and prayers for the trooper and his family

One of the posters described a situation that scared him while he was on the side of the interstate so I thought I'd start a thread asking for more stories.

My scariest interstate experiences over 24 years of driving:

1. Changing a driver side tire on the Atchafalaya Basin bridge. Barely enough room. seriously scary especially when an 18 wheeler would pass. Eventually had my wife spot for me so we could both move to the guardrail when a car came driving by in the right lane.

2. Watched a teenager damn near flip her Toyota 4Runner (on I-10 in Ascension) swerving to avoid a dog. If the median wasn't muddy allowing her to slide sideways, I'm sure she would have flipped.

3. Came over a slight hill on I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike) and hit a patch of water while doing 65MPH... Hydroplaned and fishtailed across the 4 lanes of interstate (on our side) before coming to a rest. Didn't hit a thing but had to pull off at the next exit to change my drawers

4. Driving a 26' U-Haul (with a car trailer) from Lake Charles to Baton Rouge and the transmission seized at the bottom of the Miss. River bridge right at the 10/110 split. Sat in the left lane of the split for 4 hours waiting for a wrecker to tow. Thankfully it was at 11pm - 3am

I was in the right lane and an 18-wheeler started to pass me in the left lane. When the cab of the truck was barely in front of me he started to change lanes and I had to swerve onto the shoulder (at 80mph) to avoid being ran over.

fricking meth heads.

Just reminded me of another experience

I was being driven by the Navy recruiter to the MEPS station to be processed into the military. We were driving on I-20 from Florence, SC to Columbia, SC. An 18 wheeler changes lanes and pushes us into the median where my recruiter did an awesome job of defensive driving keeping us from spinning. We were doing about 75 at the time...

I had a loaded trailer sway out of control across 3 lanes on I-10. Most scared I have ever been in my life. I was to the point of looking along the woods to find the safest place to turn in to avoid rolling the truck or hurting anyone else.

Every time I slowed down it got worse and speeding up cause the pendulum effect to sway it harder. As a last resort with caution lights flashing and no cars within 500 ft, I locked up the trailer brakes and that MFer screeched sideways to straight as an arrow.

I prayed pretty hard that night in thankfulness.

Had that happen once on I-10E at the 10/12 split. Fortunately there was enough shoulder to get out of the way.

Driving through Atlanta once just after New Year's I hit an ice patch (didn't see it coming at all) going 70ish on the interstate and slid for a bit... fortunately it was pretty late and I didn't hit anyone or lose control. Definitely a white-knuckle moment though.

a little over 10 years ago coming back from a wedding in NOLA at about 2:00 am..

we narrowly missed a drunk driving illegal immigrant going east bound in the west bound lanes - saw the flashing lights and spot lights on me from other side of interstate... moved from left to right lane right at before we reached the top of an over pass... a second later the truck whizzed tight by us in the left lane - no lights... going about 90...

closest I knowingly came to dying...

we were the last vehicle that made it through before I -10 was shut down to catch him.

some douchebag in the right lane realizes he needs to get off on one of the left exits (convention maybe)

POS slams on his brakes, comes to A COMPLETE STOP ON INTERSTATE AND PUTS BLINKER ON TO GET OVER

i was next to him, cars swerved everywhere

Other than people almost merging into me the only scary thing that's happened is I was in the left passing lane and came up behind this car that was doing about 75. I got up on her tail to let her know to get over. She stays in front for a couple miles then suddenly slings her car into the next lane, slams her brakes, gets behind me and gets within inches of my bumper, then she got back over into the middle lane and rolled her window down and started yelling (that animated fat white trash woman kind of yell where their whole body moves with their yell) to "slow down". She then started swerving towards me about 3-4 times acting like she was going to hit me or run me off the road. By this point I'm no longer passing anybody and because I know how to use the left passing lane properly want to get back into the middle lane, but now this woman has planted her car right in my blind spot and matching my speed to not let me over. This went on for about 10 miles until she got pulled over because my gf had called the police when she started swerving toward us. Hope all that was worth it for wanting to sit unimpeded in the left lane doing 75.

Fwiw I never lost my cool or was scared, but my gf was freaking out because her little sister was in the car with us and her freaking out caused my dog to freak out.

Coming back from spring break one time with my girlfriend in the car. We were talking, on I10 and I looked over at her for what seemed to be maybe a split second. Well when I turn my head back to the road the traffic was at a dead halt and I was doing at least 80. I was in the left lane and had to swerve into the median. I had to have come within a foot of hitting the car in front of me at full speed. I had to stop at the next gas station and compose myself for a minute after that.

1.) Heading home on I-49 to BR from Natchitoches on Easter Sunday in 2015 during a torrential downpour. My SUV hydroplaned at 60 mph off the interstate and all the way down to the bottom of the median (in an area where the median is extremely wide and deep).

2.) Another instance on I-49 headed south, around Alexandria. 11:00 at night, very few cars on the interstate. The wife was driving the speed limit in the slow lane. A group of six or seven crotch-rockets fly up on us, surround us and start brake-checking us while keeping us from passing. This went on for a few minutes while I called the LSP. The bikes took the Airbase Rd. exit...

I hit a patch of ice on an on ramp in Huntsville. Spun damn near 360 degrees. Luckily the cars behind me knew how to drive in icy weather and I didn't get in a wreck. Had a jackass cross three lanes of traffic at the last minute to make their off ramp. If I wasn't quick on the brakes he would have clipped my front end pretty hard.

Almost was involved with a huge wreck on I-55 street racing one night. Young driver ran up on a bystander car doing 140 and panicked when the car tried to get out of his way and they ended up in the same lane. Car behind me almost swerved into the barrier wall doing 160+(392 charger) and I ended up doing a complete 360 across 3 lanes of Hwy 55 near the Beasley road exit.

Carefully passed a driver who was sleeping while driving on I-10.Tried to wake him up by honking while I passed him but to no avail.

In Jersey six lane highway, woman slams brmakes in lane on side of me. 18 wheeler slams into the back of her. I see nothing but smoke and oil, release gas and coast through it all undamaged.

Heading westbound on I-12 near airline in the center lane. Someone from the far right lane starts coming into my lane. There's a car coming up quick in the left lane so I have to swerve left to avoid the a-hole coming into my lane then immediately right again to avoid the guy coming up in the left lane. At that point I almost lose control of my car. It takes every bit of me to keep my car facing forwards as the car shakes violently. There was a fine line between over correcting and slamming into a car beside me and I threaded the needle.
