I spent the last week in March in SF. I stayed in Cow Hollow and spent a good deal of time walking around neighborhoods--Outer Sunset, Outer Richmond, Russian Hill, Marina District, Twin Peaks, the Presidio, North Beach, GGP and the Haight, Ocean Beach--and one thing that struck me was how clean these neighborhoods were.

Of course I avoided the 'loin, Hunter's Point and such places. If you're on the hunt for trash you'll find it in SF like any other big city.

But overall, the city streets were remarkably clean.

Bums, homeless, deranged? SF has its share, but in my experience they were pretty quiet, especially compared to what I experienced as a resident of the city in the mid-80's. There must be some kind of truce on--cops relax on the homeless as long as they don't scare away all the tourists.

One other thing: SF drivers are the nicest in the world. I was truly shocked at the civility when I drove around town. I don't believe I heard a single honking horn my whole time there.

Of course, it was a slightly different story when I popped over to Oakland for lunch in the barrio with a buddy of mine. But--sadly--Oakland gonna Oakland as they say.

New York City is dirtier than both, yet it's still the greatest city in the world.

Tell us about the inordinate amount of pushy and aggressive beggars on the sidewalks in SF?

They are almost as bad as the ones that sit in the FQ. What else would you like to know?

Around college ave and Broadway is pretty nice

I think oakland has real development potential because of new money overflowing from SF

weed smells much better than piss and vomit. San Francisco was light years cleaner than New Orleans when I went.

I'll be in SF within the next month. I have a week there.

I'll be going to some ballgames, doing the Alcatraz tour, even spending a day in San Jose.

What are the other 'must do things' over there?

But culture, baw. Culture.

That's apparently the only thing that matters.

Golden Gate Park and walking through the Presidio. Walking the Bay Trail to Marine Drive, end up at Ft. Point and the base of the GGB. Walk across the GGB.

Hope you like to walk.

And ... spend a day in SJ ... why?

I was unaware going to San Jose is a 'must do.'

I love both cities, but aside from Central America those are the two dirtiest cities(SF&NO) I've been to.

No, I was stating my opinion. Was just in San Francisco and New Orleans within the last month. New Orleans still blows.
