There are countless rulers in history who claimed they had a divine right to rule, that they were the instrument of the gods and/or were a god on earth themselves.
How many of these do you think truly believed this? Surely someone as smart as say Constantine didn't actually think he was an instrument of the Christian God, he didn't really believe an archangel spoke to him and told him where to build Constantinople.
I imagine many of the Egyptian Pharaohs believed they were gods since some of them were told as much since they were born.

What other famous "divine right" rulers do you think actually believed they were ruling by gods will? What famous ones are you pretty positive just let people believe that for political gain?

I'm sure 90% of them truly believed it. I'm also sure there were some who just knew how to work the system

You think 90% believed it? I'm thinking more like 90% knew it was BS and just went with it for political advantage

They were brainwashed with that crap from birth. That was the culture of nearly all civilizations. Many of the English still believe in it and that the Queen should be their ruler.

Not so fast... Churches are in major decline in England. So... If you do not believe in God then how can you adhere to a "divine" right thing...

Yeah, but I think the question would be, since they can trace their lineage all the way back to William I...did William the Conqueror truly believe he had a divine mandate to rule? Probably not since the divine right idea didn't come around until around 1600.

Matilda of Scotland, and most old school Scottish Kings, we're direct Ascendants of mine. Where do I get my divine right money from?

You're letting your modern way of thinking and perspective cloud how you view this man. To understand him, you've got to understand the world in which he lived. It's become very popular in the past few decades to put a modern, highly secular slant on history. This does a major disservice to the subject in that it ignores the viewpoints of the times men like Constantine lived in. Just as you, me, and everyone else alive today are shaped by the world around us as it is today, the same was true in the past. We are all a product of the times in which we live. And the fact of the matter is the world until really the last century or so was highly religious. Thus, I'd say chances are very high that Constantine did indeed fully and firmly believe he had a divine right to rule as well as divine direction on how to rule.

I would split the English Kings, prior to the 18th century at 50/50 between those two categories.
