Roughest Areas of Major Cities

I've always wondered about which neighborhoods were the roughest, nastiest, drug infested, and dangerous to travel through in cities in major cities in the U.S. and around the world. The "Bankhead" area of Atlanta comes to mind. Please enlighten me.

As a general guide, you don't want to be on MLK Blvd. no matter what city you're in.

Except Houma, LA. That's their main commercial drag there. It's pretty weird, to be honest.
ETA: And, obviously I know that Houma isn't a "Major City", but the response was to the "any city" comment.

Rio, brazil - city of god favela
New Orleans - Melpomene, desire and pretty much every public housing area (mostly gone now)
Brooklyn, New York - Brownsville, although I'm not sure it's still as bad as others
Anywhere in Camden, NJ
Anywhere in port-au-prince

NYC is very shady outside of certain areas but the ones I've heard the worst about are Bed-Stuy and East New York. Nobody I knows goes to the Bronx either outside of Yankee games or the zoo.
