I'm looking at moving into a house with a buddy who has two dogs.

The lease includes a $400 pet deposit on top of the $500 regular deposit- should I feel compelled to split that with my new roommate or should he pay all of that (I don't have any pets)?

What would the OT do?

Think about it. You don't own a pet. The person that owns the pet is responsible for that portion of the deposit.

Why would you pay any of that?

He should pay for his pets. That's kinda like asking if you should buy dog food half the time

Well I certainly haven't even entertained to notion of chipping in for the pet deposit, just wanted to know what is expected in this situation.

Why would anything other than him paying the pet deposit for his pet be expected?

Just realize that any damages to the house will be on both of you, even if it's his pets.

I take it you are neither 22 years old or live in Manhattan. So yes.

seems pretty straight forward to me

and it's usually a pet fee instead of a deposit so your roommate isn't getting that money back

I would make him give you a pet deposit, too. Pets can frick some shite up and belong outside.

For you to even ask this question means you are beta as frick and will end up caving and offering to pay all of it for your roommate.

its probably a non-refundable pet fee for cleaning the house after yall move out so its not smelling like dog piss anymore

so dont pay any portion of the pet fee, he certainly shouldnt expect it

split the regular deposit, but have a conversation with him beforehand that if you lose any portion of the deposit due to damage caused by the dogs, then he needs to cover that entire cost, not you. If he has a problem with that, dont room with him.

Don't know, but I can promise you'll like the dogs better than your buddy by the time you move out.
