The Olympic Games are just 31 days away -- and Rio de Janeiro is in crisis. Violence is on the rise and police officers are at loggerheads with the government after claiming they've not been paid for months. The message from police to tourists is clear: We won't be able to protect you. The state's police officers vented their anger last week with a sign saying "Welcome to Hell" outside Rio airport. "Police and firefighters don't get paid, whoever comes to Rio de Janeiro will not be safe," the sign said.

I remember all the discussions on the OT a few short years about about travel to Rio. I wonder if people's opinions have changed?

I read this and my first thought was that it sounds an awful lot like a union tactic to get a raise. They haven't been "paid for months" but they are still coming to work? Hmmmm.

These games are really going to be a wake up call as far as choosing future cities goes.

It has been a cluster from day one.

I don't think anything bad is going to happen.

It would be a global mistake for Rio to fail.

Hell the World Cup was there in 2014? I remember all the news about traffic backups and the usual rowdy soccer fans, but nothing terrible. Maybe I missed it?

It will be like Sarajevo hosting but during the Bosnian war instead of before.

The country has deteriorated significantly since 2014. The economy is in very bad shape.

Didn't they have a set of elevated walkways that collapsed and hurt a bunch of people when the World Cup was there 2014?

It will be OK. Sometimes I think a lot of the people here want to see/hear about bad things happening in the World.

They need to quit hosting in 3rd world countries. Those countries are poor for a reason and its because of the type of people who run and live in that place.

Won't matter one bit as long as the bribery and corruption continue.

I have two colleagues who live in Rio. They don't share your optimism.
