As the $15 minimum wage becomes law, many restaurants will find it impossible to make a profit and will close. It’s already happening in coastal communities that have increased wages.

The result of one early experiment in a citywide $15 minimum wage is an ominous sign for the state’s poorer inland counties as the statewide wage floor creeps toward the mark.

Consider San Francisco, an early adopter of the $15 wage. It’s now experiencing a restaurant die-off, minting jobless hash-slingers, cashiers, busboys, scullery engineers and line cooks as they get pink-slipped in increasing numbers. And the wage there hasn’t yet hit $15.

As the East Bay Times reported in January, at least 60 restaurants around the Bay Area had closed since September alone.

A recent study by Michael Luca at Harvard Business School and Dara Lee Luca at Mathematica Policy Research found that every $1 hike in the minimum wage brings a 14 percent increase in the likelihood of a 3.5-star restaurant on Yelp! closing.

to be fair, restaurants are dying off anyway

there is probably some overlap, but it's a very unstable industry right now

Big government overstepping and killing an economy. No way a restaurant owner can absorb that kind of cost. And no way should a customer have to pay x number of dollars more for the same type of product that may be marginal at best (and was well suited for the price point they were at before the wage increase).

How so? Are you referring to fine dining or neighborhood type joints?

Let me guess, you find the owners of the restaurants are racist because theyd rather close than take out loans and pay their black employees out of their own pockets even without revenue or profit?

$15 an hour and still can't get orders right half the time..They'll soon be replaced by kiosks anyway.

It's absolutely no surprise that the people who advocated for this also vote this into office all the time

We need to pass the $15 MW to see what effects it has on business!!!!!

I just got back from Cali and this has no validity at all. Lots of signs in restaurants looking for workers. And we eat at cheap places.
