You could not be more ignorant on the subject. Our libraries are a tremendous resource that do more than just house cheap books. They teach literacy classes, have after school programs, bring in guest lecturers, serve as a gathering place for community meetings, host dozens of groups, teach classes on any topic immaginable, offer free access to expensive research databases that most people cannot access, ect

It's not 1970. You can find whatever you want on the internet. As a kid, everything you need is at your school, and your school's library as far as whatever knowledge your looking for.
As an adult, get a fricking job and pay for the internet and get all the knowledge you want. Or you can go to the bookstore and buy your books.

And it's not free. The taxpayers are paying for it, when it could be used for something a lot more useful to the public.

Yeah, but he doesn't use them, so they should either be (a) shut down or (b) forced to charge people for their use.

That's what school is for.

have after school programs,

Like what? Oh lets look at the schedule.
Walking Club tonite
Teen Gaming: Marvel vs CapCom Tomorrow
Soap Making and Quilting Wednesday
Lego's Thrusday with some Ukelele and knitting later

Glad they have these activities after school

serve as a gathering place for community meetings

plenty of buildings can do this, like churches.

host dozens of groups

Like book clubs?

teach classes on any topic immaginable

like quilting and knitting. Awesome. I could learn more about it from a youtube video.

What are these databases that are only accessible at the library?

I'm not trying to say they are terrible places. they are just antiquated and not needed that much anymore, yet we are pouring money into them at a time where the state does not have money.

It doesn't matter what they ask for - the bank is only going to loan based upon appraised value and that is based upon values of the last 30 days. Idiots

You've GOT to be trolling.

Offering people, regardless of their resources, a place to learn and better themselves free of distractions and negative influences is never a bad thing for the society as a whole. Hell, how are you going to say that kids/teens shouldn't be running the streets and up to no good if you don't even provide a safe place for them to go to get away.

Libraries HAVE changed and will continue to change as they become less about hosting books and more about a general public house offering people alternatives to their crappy, everyday realities. If they haven't already, I'd like to see them partner with community colleges to begin teaching skills courses that could lead to potential employment opportunities like machinist and welding etc.

The state doesn't fund the EBR Library system.

Unless you're trying to say that the EBR Library system should bail out the state?

I grew up in East Feliciana Parish. It's nuts how high land prices have risen up there. I looked at buying 30-50 acres last year and most people want 10K-15K an acre for tracks that size. The cost per sq ft for a house is much lower but if you put it on any sizable track your back in the same boat as being in BR.

One can definitely find information unlikely to be found anywhere else, like books on how to build your own Intel 286 based PC, and loads of other books filled with obsolete information that the taxpayers are paying to store. Also, don't forget about giving the homeless a place to live during the day.

I don't get the free of distractions and negative influences part of this.
We offer schooling to kids until they are 18 and ready to be an adult. We offer after school activities like sports and other clubs. These schools have libraries. What is the public library needed for?

Well i guess we need a lot more libraries.

Exxon has well over 5,000 people in that plant on a given day. They may only employ 1,700 but when you add all the contractors to it, they are the largest employer in Baton Rouge easily. And there are probably several local businesses that rely heavily on that plant operating.

For 125/sq in the Austin metro, you're getting a POS.
