After three years of doing crossfit I finally think it is time to take some time off to get stronger and need some advice on a strength program to follow. My first year I made the usual beginner strength gains and really enjoyed it, however the last two years I haven't gotten any stronger. I got much better at doing the workouts but my maxes never went up much after the first year.

I need some advice on what program to follow to get stronger and not really worry about conditioning as much. I am going to look into following either Starting Strength, CF Football, GLSP or the Texas Method. Anyone out there have experience following any of these or one I haven't listed and can recommend one over the others? Not really interested in any split routines, mainly just ones that include compound lifts with accessory work.

How are you alive after 3 years of crossfit? Those exercises are so dangerous!

you don't have to do some special program. just lift, eat right, and get plenty of rest. it's not rocket science

Lift weights and do cardio. It is revolutionary.

I have no issues with anyone choosing a different means of exercise to crossfit, but you can still do crossfit and gain strength. Look into different programming philosophies. Outlaw, OPT, Crossfit Football, etc. I have a 1240 bench/squat/deadlift at 180 pounds, doing crossfit

How often were you taking time off during your 3 years of CF? I don't mean a day here and there. I'm talking like 1 FULL week every 8 weeks or so. Were you doing that?

CF or 5x5 strength training or whatever, your strength will plateau at a point if you don't take solid breaks from weight/resistance training. And I don't mean a weekend.

Just part of it. Not the whole solution.

I dont. If a genie granted me health and body that looked in shape, id never work out again. Its 2014, you dont need strength. We have machines and shite. This aint the Serengeti.

Well being reasonably strong keeps you healthy longer. Fewer back problems, etc. That being said, it's not rocket science and you don't need to be on any specific "program" to be healthy and/or strong.

I think Mark Rippetoe worshipers give "being strong" a bad name. To them I think it's mostly an excuse to be a fat frick and still feel good about some aspect of their physique/physical ability.

Add weight to those workouts.

Workout calls for 95lb thrusters? Do 115/135.

Do heavier weight with less reps. Slowly up your weight though.

You sound like a good candidate for Crossfit Football or Power Athlete.

This program is created by an ex-NFL player who wanted a strength-based program geared toward performance.

It really isn't similar to Crossfit, as it has actual periodization and programming.

For those unfamiliar but strength-smart, think Starting Strength + Conditioning.

Basic linear progression - your squat, deadlift, press, and bench WILL increase.

I hardly ever missed time, if I did it was usually one day here or there never weeks at at time. My problem is that I don't have time to do the gym's programming (which was usually a metcon and not strength work) and then add strength specific work on top of it. I am going to start working out on my own and just follow a more strength focused program instead of the gyms programming.
