Question regarding History survey courses at LSU

Are books and book reviews required?
Or is it just exams?
We're talking about western civ and US history surveys that most all students are required to take.

I had to take Hist 1001, 1002 for my major. The book was optional but never used as class material. My professor was strictly lecture and tests were on his lectures. Those were 2 of the easier A's at LSU.

That answers it. Thanks.

I think it depends on the professor.

depends on instructor.
My US History class required us to read two books.
"Jefferson vs Adams" and "12 years a slave"
exams were based on the reading and lecture materials.
Western Civ from 1500-present did not have the same reading requirement.
History exams were tough too. Lots of writing in a very short amount of time. You essentially had to write a 2 page essay responding to a question posed by the instructor.
If you are going to take a history class this Summer, be prepared for a ton of note writing and do not miss a class

Woah. Completely depends on the teacher. Classes were 100% lecture, but I had several courses where the exams were based on chapters in the book combined with lectures. And the tests are also 100% written, just FYI. History itself is easy, but the structure for the exams is horrible. They give you 5 questions, and 3 of those 5 will be asked, but they don't tell you which 3. At least that's how it was when I took it.

"Yeah...JUST History? It musta' been a survey course then, huh?"
"Yeah, it was, it was surveys."
"Right."
"You should check it out, it's a good course. It's a, uh...good..good class."
"How'd you like that course?"
"You know...Frankly, I found the class, you know, rather...uh...elementary."
"Elementary.."
"Yeah.."
"You know I don't doubt that it was."
"Yeah..."
"I uh...I remember that class. It was um...it was just between recess and lunch."

I love History and found the Western Civ class to be awesome. Taught me a lot about how Europe has evolved into what it is today.
US History was great as well but mainly because my instructor (Bob Outland) looked and acted like Tom Hanks. He presented the material with a fresh perspective.

Thank you all. I was just trying to clear up a dispute concerning the expectations of current survey courses.
I teach one myself and assign one book review per semester.
Some of the older teachers assumed that all LSU history surveys still require 4-6 readings, which I assumed to be highly unlikely.

I have a history degree from LSU and 4-6 is about the 3000 level courses. The "survey" courses are maybe one or two, professor dependent, but mostly the text book and lecture.

This was more or less my experience for the essay part.
That, combined with fill in the blank (no multiple choice of word bank) from my instructor.
Go to ratemyprofessor.com to see if you can get details on instructor before choosing.
Good luck!

Read the syllabus.
Actually not bad advice, some professors have their syllabus online for everyone to read. Start checking now and pic the professor you want.
