ok guys this isnt easy to come out and talk about, but i had my first appointment with a psychiatrist today and wanted to see if any of yall have had any experience with prozac?

i have some OCD, anxiety, and recently an eating disorder. ive lost 70 lbs and im down to 150(5'10) and im scared to eat more to gain lean muscle because im afraid im going to get fat and get back to 220lbs.

the dr recommended a small dosage- 10mg of prozac to see how i feel. he also thought about lexepro but said prozac has worked better with eating disorder patients

im scared to death of taking medications, so any experiences on this medication is much appreciated

side effects, good/bad, worth it?

TIA

Surround yourself with kind people, find a purpose in life, and excersize. Your body will release dopamine and seratonin and you'll feel better.

I would have asked your doctor when you were there.

I can't comment on Prozac in particular, but antidepressants can do a great job of muffling those OCD thought loops.

Millions take it and they aren't dying. 10mg is a tiny dose.

I'm too depressed to talk about it.

Ugh, this doesn't always work if you have something wrong mentally.

OP, there are so many options out there. Just be honest and not afraid to talk to your doctor about any side effects or new symptoms that arise. I was on one in a similar class and had every major side effect, switched to another and had no problems at all.

Just be sure to take the medicine everyday and if you are on the right one it will make a significant difference.

SSRI's are very safe drugs and 10 mg is on the low end of the dosage scale. Just be sure to remember that it can take 4-6 weeks for them to take effect. Dont expect to take it first day and be cured, its all a process.

Sounds like you are struggling and I don't see a downside in trying the medication. Good luck

Exactly. If you haven't already, and you still have the concerns, you may also consider seeing a psychiatrist as they have more specialized training regarding psychotropic medications.

That said, SSRIs are common enough (and less violatile than many other medications) that any primary care physician should have adequate knowledge.

thanks man, means a lot. thats kind of where im at

im just kind of blah, i have no feelings one way or the other. im indifferent to everything. i really dont care or get excited about things i use to love. i have no sex drive, cant get excited for date nights with wife, going out for drinks, etc

its sad man, i miss my old self. my trainer tells me i need to eat more and feed my muscles but im scared to death of gaining weight. my wife and people tell me i look sick

Then no harm in trying.

But just like he said. It will take a few weeks to over a month for you to notice a difference.

Others around you will notice sooner if you are on the right medication.

Well being undernourished is not going to help. Even if taking medication, proper diet, exercise, sleep, and positive mindset are vital to maximization.

When your life is suffering. Try a fricking pill. Prozac is an old SSRI. Has to be researched to death. Should be fine.

Obviously, you need to think about more, preferably outside the confines of a message board, but you sound like very good candidate for an ssri trial.

I deal with a lot a patients on a daily basis that have an aversion to psychiatric medication for one reason or another. I get the stigma, but...

You just have to realize all medications have their purpose and their are reasons doctors prescribe them. You sound like you need a helping hand. Just my two cents. Good luck!

That is a really low dose of Prozac. For OCD, the dose can be as high as 80 mg depending on the severity of the condition. Did your doctor say he was going to gradually increase it? Also, cognitive behavioral therapy is successful for OCD and may do as much for you as the meds.

Can't agree with this enough. Would definitely bring it up with your doctor.
