Having grown up in Alpharetta, I would definitely say Milton/Alpha/Johns Creek and East Cobb (Pope/Walton) school district areas would be the best places to raise a family

Yep, no contest.

As for other areas to look into, my #1 and #2 choices would likely be Sandy Springs and Roswell. But I'm in town so I prefer the closer burbs. I like the Woodstock/Canton/Cumming areas, but too far out.

Not to be a douche, but once you get used to living in town it is hard to think about moving to the outer burbs. Just a different way of life. For reference, I grew up in the southern suburbs so I also know the flip side of that (difficult to imagine living in town vs. the suburbs).

Despite being from down there, I wouldn't recommend moving anywhere on the southside. While Newnan and PTC have enough stuff and nice areas to keep one entertained, just take a look at the 20 year history of the southern counties.

I live in East Cobb, but Sprayberry district. My daughters cheered for Pope. Great school district, some of the best in the state, but there is a snobbish element to it.

Considering the lack of really good public high schools in the metro, I say embrace the snobbery.

Of course, that's relative. Compared to the southeast generally, Atlanta has a lot of above average schools. But when talking about the public high schools I'd want my kids to go to, there are only a handful.

And the pop up trendy neighborhoods are falling apart.
Some of my coworkers and battle baws live there and I repeatedly hear the exact same problems going on with all of their houses and/or neighborhoods.
This was a pop-up community turned 'incorporated town' based on a tail end real estate boom, word of mouth and a very large mega church that drew a lot of those residents based on Mr Stanley's snake oil. But that's none of my business

Move to the southside (Fayette/Coweta). Less than half the traffic, less expensive just as nice, great public schools, almost no crime and friendly neighbors, tons of land and a very quick/easy commute to the city/airport.

Northside is better for work but south is better for living.

Newnan to Buckhead was ranked the worst commute in America a few years ago.

And a pain in the arse to get to a highway during rush hour.

OP, if you plan to drive to work, live close to 400, 85, 75, etc...
