I'm training for my first half marathon and have somewhat hit a road block. I get pretty significant leg pain around mile 7-8 and just can't get past mile 9 at this point. I feel like I could run much longer cardio wise I just can't get my legs to cooperate. Any advice for a first time runner? Thanks.

Are you hydrating during the run?

Have you eaten anything to refuel when you've gone that far? I did the Rock N Roll in New Orleans a couple years back and remember around mile 8 they the Goo bars.

Reasons/fixes are going to vary significantly depending on where the pain is and whether is fatigue or injury-induced.

Stop and stretch if you need to. Usually I have leg problems until mile 4 then I can go on auto pilot

This. Also, how often are you running and how long have you been running? Cardio will improve faster than your legs, so it is easy for a new runner to get injured by over doing the miles.

Sorry got tied up with work. The pain is in my ankles, feet, and knees. I started running in July but grew up playing soccer so I've always had an easier time with the breathing etc. I'll admit my legs are pretty damn skinny so maybe that's it? Yes I'm running on concrete. Tried salt tabs and other endurance drinks but no help.

It could be quite a few things, but not likely regulated to the length of one run of 7-8 miles.

How many miles are you running a week? Did you add too much mileage too quickly? Do you take recovery weeks? Are you following a plan (and sticking to it) or just winging it?

It sounds like you just haven't built up leg/feet/ankle strength to handle the kind of mileage you are running.

I'd consider maybe dropping back on the weekly mileage for a couple weeks and work on some drills and form. Jump rope, strides, a skips, b skips, etc.

Ran 9.5 miles yesterday and had same issue. My weekly mileage is probably 17-21. I'm winging it more than anything. I've looked at several training programs and they just seemed too easy. If I run less than 5 miles it doesn't feel like much of a workout. I think you're right though the mileage may be too much at this point. I'm gonna take 2-3 days off and maybe stick to an actual plan. Any other suggestions? It seems like most people would deal with this as first time runners.

well there is your problem. tue/thurs should be mild 3/4 miles runs then do some lifting or something. Do a short run on saturday with a long run Sunday.

I may be uninformed, but I hope you aren't talking about literally the old school salt tabs?
Drink water man. Salt pulls water out of your cells. If you aren't taking in enough potassium you're gonna dehydrate yourself prematurely. Just drink a bunch of water in the days leading up to your long runs. I will say that could not have anything to do with your pain though. You more than likely moved up in mileage too soon.
Most programs are 12-16wks long and it's several weeks before getting into the long runs.

Just because less than 5 miles feels to easy doesn't mean you should keep going.

Each run should have a purpose -- a long slow run, an interval run and then a tempo run. Whatever plan you choose stick with it .. more than likely people who know more than you put it together.

Regarding salt tabs, the Salt Stik Caps have sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium in the correct ratios -- they can really help with leg cramps.

Also, are you wearing the right shoes for you?? Go to a local running store and let them check out your gait, etc.
