Question for medical sales reps

I am always seeing postings on job sites for companies looking for medical sales reps. Every single one always has requirements that are strict. You can't even apply unless you have ___ years experience in selling to doctors.
My question is how does one even break into the business of everybody hiring has these requirements?

Be good looking, an ex athlete, or know someone

Are you female?
Are you somewhat hot?
Do you look sexy in a business suit?
If your answer to any of those is no, we doctors don't want you to enter the profession.

Don't be mad, UPS is hiring.

These are not entry level medical sales jobs so they don't want the burden of training you on the world of Healthcare and their products and services. Entry level medical sales jobs will typically accept documented success in similar businesses or may take a flyer on the right person.

Small, local medical companies are good entry level positions

Why would you want to do that?
Go around kissing doctors asses then get laid off every 18 months

Bingo. And like everything else, its who you know and who you blow.
I know several reps that dont have college degrees. And they make more money than a lot of physicians. And its not like they work really really hard for it. Unless you count schmoozing in bars, restaurants, on fishing trips etc as work.

How old are you?
Most people start as an associate rep where you assist an experienced very busy rep. That way you get the training you need while helping the company. It usually takes about 2-4 years to progress from associate to full line rep at one of the heavy hitting companies like Medtronic, Stryker, or J&J.

I got into it by being a floater representative. Say a mother goes on maternity leave for 3 months, I go down to their territory and cover it. Other routes include working for company being contracted by a company you hope to work for one day. The last evolves knowing the hiring manager well. Those are the best options.

You got devices, disposables, cap equip, pharma, manufacturing, dist, services All are medical sales jobs.
Most companies I know are desperate for proven, professional, outside sales guys and have a hard time filling positions with the right folks.
Go get some sales experience in pharma, or in some kind of ancillary service to healthcare. There are still good jobs out there.
Talk to the reps, understand that if a lot of folks have failed in the territory before you, you may want to pass. They prob didn't all suck

Answer is: depends!
Usually do need the requirements they ask for, or very very strong b2b sales background.
What device/position is it?
