The day before yesterday I took a bloodtest at my GP's office. At 11 that night my phone was ringing off the hook and the cops were beating on my door. I was told to get to the hospital right away. An ambulance was offered but I drove myself. When I got to the hospital I was told that my potassium was at 7.5 and createnin was 4.7. Createnin not spelled correctly. They admitted me into the ER. About four hours later they came back and said that I was ok. Now it's apparent that they mixed my blood with someone else's. Is this a common occurrence? What about the bill?

I spoke to my nurse last night and the testing people are claiming that the actual testing tubes are contaminated. Not just mine an entire batch. They are planning on wiping out the charges for the ER visit and the cost of the original test. I'm not sure I buy the contamination story but that's the story I'm getting.

We have clients who work for the 2 biggest labs and any abnormal changes that come back they have repeated. They, 3 different clients, say samples can easily get mishandled in transit and in the lab.

As for the bill, collateral damage, you are responsible. They thought you were in renal failure and followed best course based on what knowledge they had regardless of the validity.

It sounds like someone is just having a go at you. Have you been involved in a prank war or something? Creatin and potassium aren't even real things in your body.

Guaranteed you will be stuck with this. Get ready to duke it out with some of the dumbest people on earth: the hospital billing department.

Createnin not spelled correctly.

That's because they're C-R-E-T-I-N-S.

That would indicate you were in kidney failure.

You should post the same story on Poli Talk, but instead of the police coming to your house over blood test results, have it be after your doctor asked you about guns in your house.

I sure hope that the other person who was actually in kidney failure whose blood got mixed up with the OP's blood is okay.

OP - How long did they take to tell you that they had mixed up the samples??

The tests have been repeated on the blood with the same results. It's obvious that it's not my blood. I just wonder about the poor person who's blood it actually is.

I got there around eleven thirty and they came and told me around three thirty. Also they had me drink this foul smelling and worse tasting medicine to lower my potassium. Considering that my potassium levels were probably normal would this put my levels dangerously low. It also gave me a horrible case of the shits

I have never heard of such a situation of a medical office calling late at night or having the cops come. Did you directly talk to your doctor to confirm he authorized this. Just sounds extreme.

But this morning I got a strange phone message from my local hospital. They said my doctor wanted me to come to hospital for a test. Didn't say which doctor or what test. Left the general number for hospital so when I called back, they had no idea what department to transfer it to. wtf
