Certain schools in my area have caught flak in the past for religious activity such as prayer during school assemblies, which to my understanding was addressed by the Freedom From Religion Foundation when someone reported it. This week my son informed me that there was a priest or pastor or whatever at his public school - during lunch you had the option to go listen to his talk and were provided with chicken nuggets as a bribe. The talk was something about "the road having plenty curves but Jesus is the bus driver." Does this belong in a public school? Would you let this slide?

ETA: My son did not attend. He heard about the content from a friend.

Jesus man!
Do you have to be outraged at everything like everybody else?

It's not like he's there baptizing them. Let it go.

Keyword being option here is what makes it okay.

Send your kid to school with some chicken nuggets of his own.

Who cares?

What's the worst case scenario here?

So do I get equal time to go speak about atheism, with the students given the same "option"?

ETA: Do Muslims, Jews, and Satanists get the same option to speak as well?

Why would you bitch about it?

They didn't force anyone to listen, and if your son couldn't say no to chicken nuggets, you have bigger issues.

Exactly

Our kids certainly have the other side of the story shoved down their throats enough

I dont have a problem the children having the option but bribing with chicken nuggets is wrong. What I do have a problem with is that no other religion is being taught or shared. I dont want my children indoctrinated by the school. My daughter already says there is a man in the sky. I asked her how she knows, and her teacher told her. She is in K. so when she learns there is no Santa she will figure out that this man in the sky is the same thing.

I think religion should be practiced at home and in a church, thats it. Teaching small children that there is a man in the sky is stupid. They dont question Santa at that age so they will believe it. This is the proof that the god of the bible doesnt exist. If it isnt taught, that god disappears.

Publicly funded college campuses ranging from LSU to the service academies have chapels for a few different denominations on campus which students can go to for religious services if they so choose. This sounds like a similar concept.

My son didn't go. He heard about the content from a friend.

All of my in-laws are batshit crazy holy rollers, so I don't have to worry about a speech influencing him. It's more about the principle of religion in public schools - especially when the school board has been confronted on the issue and they know it is not allowed.

Are you qualified to speak about atheism? If so, did you ask the school if you could go and share your views with students in a similar fashion? I'm assuming the answer is no, and you are just bitching about nothing.

So, you're just upset that someone else had the option of attending?

So you and your son are the type to cry about whatever someone tells you to be mad about. Gotcha.

If it was a seminar on "safe sex" or the "females right to choose" or "accepting transgendered children" NOBODY would say it didn't belong in the school because they feel it is freedom of speech.

Funny how so many people think this is every human's right to have....except when it comes to God. Its amazing what people today decide to try to stop and what they allow.

Yes, I am qualified. But I also know that asking for equal time would result in my kid being treated unfairly for the rest of his time in high school.
