Finally need to get glasses based on my recent annual eye exam. Problem is neither me or my wife have ever had to get them, so im a newbie on buying them.

Long story short, they recommended all these add ons to my lenses. Something that helps when looking at screens, extra stratch protection ,etc.

my question is- Are all the add ons worth it? If so which ones?

Also, for the high priced frames, are you just paying for the name?

Any advice is appreciated. Just have to wear them when working on laptop/during the day as needed.

Designer brands -
Literally just paying for name. They just slap branding on at factory.

Look online. Well worth it versus in store.

They are all made by the same company. I would start at Costco and see if you find any frames you like there.

As for lenses, scratch protection and anti-glare are well worth the cost. The rest isn't really needed.

As for frames, yes, you are simply paying for name. All of the frames are pretty much the same metal/plastic.

Ok. So my insurance pays for basic plastic lenses.

I need something that will help when I'm in front of a screen. Is that the anti glare ?

I always find they cost 4X the price advertised for some reason.

Google Warby Parker.

You're welcome. Just saved you a few hundred dollars.

Sorry for obvious. But what's the big advantage of the anti glare?

Will that help when I'm on my laptop all damn day?

Dont buy from the actual doctor, unless your insurance covers a pair each year. I buy all of my glasses now from LINK you dont have to get the 6.95 frames, I think I got some 30 dollar ones. Total was like 60 bucks with addons. My mom even got descending bifocals (the kind with no lines) for 80. We both like our frames, and mine havent broken yet in a year and half, which is pretty good for the price. If you frame breaks, and you like it, just buy the same frame and replace lenses.

One thing I always look for in a pair of frames is spring hinges, as they tend to stay put on my face.

High priced designer frames aren't any better IMO, but if you really like a certain one, you can often find them cheaper someplace else. I saw the same designer frames at Target that they had at Lenscrafters for about $75 less.

Get the anti-glare & the scratch-resistant coating.

Luxottica's monopoly on eyewear is insane.

Top is brands they own, bottom is the ones they are licensed to make:

And then they own these retail stores:

Without anti glare anytime you have a picture taken or get recorded, the light reflects off your lenses. It really looks terrible.

At a minimum get anti glare and scratch resistance. Lenses scratch easy and will need replacing as loomking through scratched lenses is a pita. Transition lenses are nice too. My last 2 pair I've had them and really come in handy. Fyi they can be gray or even brown.

As others have said, anti glare and scratch resistant. Anti glare looks so much better than regular lenses. I have a pair with and a pair without and basically never wear the ones without because it looks worse.

My dyslexia must be kicking in - I clicked on this thread fully expecting to read something about purchasing a glass eye.
