The industry is filled with these geniuses who have no clue how an actual construction project gets built.
But hey....my task management says that steel only takes 14 days to erect so we can expect it to be done.

That's what any manager does. The higher you get on the ladder, the more shite you delegate downwards. It's glorious

i am in the industrial side but have a an engineering degree as our company requires one to become a full on Manager. Depending on where you live our guys start as assistent PMs and start in the 55-65 range with no expierence. With expierence and the engineering degree, its starting around 65-70. 85 by the time they make pm plus gas and car allowance and with 10+ years expierence 120 min. we all work 8-5 85-90% of the time and then about 2 turnarounds a year.
One of my coworkers left in May to go run one of the LNG projects were they are installing a ton of fireproofing. Had 8 years expierence and he got 145 plus OT paid for working fridays(5 10's) plus truck allowance and gas.
Commercial world....frick those hours. and honestly just depends on the company/area/project.
I love my job but can be stressful as hell at times when you are in charge of 100-200 people. Also sucks when you get to senior pm level and you are responsible for the financials for the complete branch and are in charge of all the other PMs. I am at that level now after only being with the company a few years due to people leaving to run these huge projects around the LC area and its stressful as hell at times. But no way I am going to a project specific job where I would be looking for another job in 3-5 years. Not worth it to me.
As far as what they do, they are responsible for the contracts, all accounting, profit margins, making sure production rates are met, managing change orders, managing the employees, ordering materials, submitals/takeoffs and if they are the PM in charge they essentially are managing the complete project. Everything from timesheets to billings are going to be under them(any project of any size is going have others assigned under the PM).

no shite. If you know any with an engineering degree send them my way.
and I know a ton of PMs that all they do is kind of just go to meetings and the super runs everything, not like that for a true pm.

I'm about to graduate in CM. I can help shed light on the commercial side of things as that's where my experience/future job is at.
Graduating LSU CMs can start any where from 40 to 65k. A big company will throw a truck/allowance and company cell on top of that.
The company I got hired on with is based out of Houston. One of the bigger commercial outfits out there (+500MM Yearly business) jobs include building educational, health, commercial retail, and light industrial use.
My particular career ladder was laid out as follows.
Entry level Field Engineer: 55k, $350 car allowance, cell
12-18 months senior FE: 65-70k, all else same.
2-3 years Area (assistant) Superintendent/ assistant PM: 75-90K, truck/$500 car allowance, cell, company Thinkpad.
4-6 years Superintendent/ PM: 95-120K, all else same.
7-10 years General Superintendent/ Senior PM: 120k-150k, possible ownership part of company, all else same.
All those positions are obviously based on how well you can do on your individual duties/projects. Guys who finish on time and under budget consistently (hahaha) will get paid more. Those numbers don't include ~10% in performance bonuses.
After the senior positions you get into stuff like Project executive, director of field operations, etc. Stuff where the pay range is based more on how much profit the company is bringing.
I'm going the field route. I have pretty decent field experience coming out of school and was told I could see my first steps in the company accelerated based on the future availability of those positions and the aging of non degreed senior field staff in general.
TLDR: PMs are making a whole lot more than women's studies majors.

Thats pretty much how it is on the industrial side but pretty much every true pm on the industrial side has an engineering degree.

And the "bitch" work I am doing at this moment is watching my green egg cook my brisket while I'm in my pool with an ice cold Ghost in the Machine reading about your mediocre career and salary while your are posting in the job shack and stealing time from your employer.
Because I'm the owner. Bitch.

Yea I've got friends that are CE's that keep me in the loop for the industrial stuff. They are the ones that told me if I was going to do CM go commercial with a big GC.
Industrial is great but the guys with the engineering degrees will always have a leg up on me.
I was always going commercial anyways though, as that's where my experience is at
