New Orleans, I guess is the most obvious answer.

I'm going to say St. Louis, though. Really nice looking place with all the red brick row houses. Seems rather sad what it's become.

Lots of European cities with large sections that look like the Gaza Strip now

Well I went a couple of times to Detroit in the early-mid 70's and while not necessarily the prettiest it was a very nice and vibrant city. Not so much now.

Downtown D is nice. The burbs are nice. It is the in between. I can only imagine how nice it once was. They have some great looking houses that are just beyond repair.

Probably Philadelphia. It's not a complete shithole. There are some really great parts of the city but it can go from charming to crack house with one wrong turn.

Like? Please be specific. I'm in Europe at least twice a year to various countries and besides Greece I don't see that.

Yeah, this is sort of what I'm talking about and sort of how I judge the aesthetics of what a city is (or I guess in this case once was). I always like to go see this part of whatever new city I visit. In most cases it is the most troubled part, but in a lot of cases (like St. Louis, for example) you can tell how obviously nice it once was.

Lake Providence, LA used to be a wonderful small Louisiana town. I was shocked at its decline the last time I was there.

An unexpected suggestion but a good one.

I'll nominate Abbeville, LA.
