My heater smells gassy. It's a heyward. They ALL smell like gas on startup. Mine smells after. It never smells when off. So I do not think I have an outright leak.

Just wonder if I have a leak within the unit or if it just is not burning off all gas or "mercaptan" and I am still smelling it. It is outdoors and well ventilated. Nobody is smoking back there.

I have already called my pool guy. Just wanted to beseech the knowledge of the OT while I wait.

Mercaptan has a really low odor threshold, it wouldn't take much to smell. Spray soapy water on the lines to see if it bubbles anywhere to determine if it's an external leak.

I'm an old man with old man aches. If you don't have a hot tub with your pool, you've done it wrong.

If I had an exterior leak, it would always smell. No?

I'm not taking the cover off of anything. The lines i can get to would always smell if they leaked?

Am I wrong? It happens often.

When I was in a class on ovens we were learning how to use leak detectors which can smell gas at 5ppm. But oddly the human nose can smell mercaptan at 1-2ppm. So our noses are better gas leak detectors than the $300 detectors.
