Anyone ever had this done?. I messed up my MCL and ACL but neither are town. MCL is supposed to heal in its own but ACL is stretched and could use surgery. Anyone know anything about this? Someone mentioned it me me in a bar last night so I haven't had time to do any research.

Don't know a whole lot about it other than it's high prevalence and use by professional athletes. I wouldn't use it as a preventative to surgery though unless you're in season as an athlete or about to begin one.

Consult with an ortho who does it for his/her two cents !

I plan to. Like I said, I haven't had time to do any reasearch yet. I was just out for dinner last night and someone asked me what happened and started talking about it. It's not an alternative if the ligaments are torn according to him, and mine aren't. Just curious if anyone here has done it. This guy seemed to swear by it.

I've done this twice for tendonitis in my elbow and it worked like a charm. Steroids stopped working so I went to PRP. Next step was going to be surgery. Thankfully the PRP worked.

I have researched a bit. I had a ortho on the northshore that wanted to ginuea pig me with PRP injections so I politely declined, but I have read that it is a new thing with athletes and such. The only thing is insurance does not pay and it is like $500 a pop and they recommend more than one. I might try it if I can find an experienced ortho in the city or somewhere.

Its shown some promise in certain situations like tendonitis. We have tried it for partial tears of ligaments and results are mixed. MCL may help speed up the natural healing process but at 1 year probably doesn't matter if you did PRP or not.

The evidence that it actually works is spotty at best. In 10 years this will all fall to the wayside as another medical fad. Everyone is looking for the latest and greatest technology, but most of these things don't pan out - that's why insurance doesn't pay for it. And the reason you hear about professional athletes getting it is because they are willing to try anything to get better faster, and $500 cash for each injection is nothing for them.

How long ago? PRP has been around for a while. PRP works as long as it stays where you need, and that's the big problem. If you inject it into a joint, then the synovial fluid will probably wash it away. My company has a graft that will keep it where you want it, but then we're not talking about an injection anymore.

I don't have any medical procedures done before sending out an O-T page to nurse 1st.

Paging nurse, I got PPR questions.

I think that's the same option that the doctors over at the bone and joint clinic gave me for me nasty bone spurs in my elbows. Either that or surgery which I heard is an absolute bitch to recover from. Or get the plasma injections and see if they work.

I doubt she has knowledge regarding PRP, but she might.

I have a family member who plays college baseball. He messed up his shoulder but did not need surgery. He tried PRP and told me he had very good success with it. Both his parents are physicians and seem to think enough of it to get several treatments. I believe he had 2 or 3 injections, I think.

dozens of teammates have given it a shot in the hopes of avoiding surgery. All had surgery or retired.

Bump from yesterday. Any of these cats still on here that were discussing this? I have an interest, but had to get off the computer....

I have had it done. I tore my ACL and also had a bucket handle MCL tear. I can't say that it made a difference one way or the other as I don't have a baseline to judge what the results would have been had I not had the PRP injection in concert with the reconstruction/surgery. I figured that it couldn't hurt and my MD suggested that I would allow for a better end result.
