Pinched nerve or bruised/broken tailbone?

So last night I was playing around with the kids and jumping butt first on a bean bag that apparently didn't have as many beans as I expected.
It didn't hurt at all when I did it but over the next 3-4 hours before bed it started to get pretty painful.
The pain in my tailbone I can handle but it's shooting down my butt and legs and groin that is pretty debilitating. I can generally sit and walk normally but sleeping was almost impossible and any weird shift in direction or body weight causes pretty significant pain. Bending over is virtually impossible and I'm dreading the next time I have to take a dump.
If it were a bruise/broken tailbone would the pain still shoot down the legs or is that more indicative of a pinched nerve or something?

Maybe broke your sacram. I did that when I herniated my L5-s1 in a snowboarding crash.

^what they Said. that's some shite. Long time to heal too

as far as I know, anytime you have a shooting pain, it is usually some kind of nerve issue....maybe you herniated a disk or something like that...

I fractured my tailbone in high school and the pain was isolated to the area of my upper arse crack.

I did this a while back. Hurt fit about six months with sciatica symptoms. Go get it injected. Wish I had.

It sounds like you have a pilinoidal cyst

Broken clavuoa. Common break in beanbag accidents.

I'm not a doctor but I have learned a lot about spine injuries through work.
If you are having shooting pains down your leg it is most of the time a nerve related issue. When the spinal cord reaches the lower lumbar area it spreads out from being one cord to more of horse's tail like packet of nerves that spread out more sporadically. It is actually called caudal equina at those levels. This means the pain is not as an exact of a predictor of the location of your injury as it would be if you had shooting pain in your arm. Here is a chart that a doctor will use to try to pinpoint the location of your injury

I think if you had injured the actual tailbone the pain would be immediate and could be relieved but nerve pain isn't so forgiving.
TLDR: Go see a doctor so he can give you a proper diagnosis because that area of the body is different for everyone.

very interesting...I didn't know that such charts existed...

I kinda thought the same about the nerve thing because it doesn't hurt to touch the area and the shooting pain down the legs/groin, if I go to the doctor what do they do to treat pinched nerves or is it something that just has to get better on its own?

Sounds like a pinched nerve..i'd rest as much as possible and don't do whatever is hurting it. With luck it will go away on its own if you didn't break your tailbone, which it doesn't sound like you did

It depends on what is causing the "pinched nerve". Best case some you caused some inflammation around your nerve so it will heal on its own after a while. Worst case is you damaged your vertebrae around the nerve and it will require surgery.
If the pain is bearable wait a few days and see if it feels better. If it doesn't go see a doctor and they will order an MRI and some PT. Once they see your MRI they can diagnose your problem and see if you need surgery, injections, more PT, or just rest.
Don't be too alarmed if they also order an MRI of your head

Take some ibuprofen and netflix binge in bed for the rest of the weekend. If the pain continues then you may need an MRI to check out for a herniated disc.

Please note: if you doctor insists on checking S5 without a multitude of good reasons, you should run from that office.

There's a massage parlor near my house that will perform an S5 check for less than my insurance copay.

It is probably a bruised tailbone. If you broke your tailbone, you would be in much more pain. The doctor told me it was pretty damn hard to break your tailbone, which is why I would assume it was bruised.
Funny story, I had my tailbone bruised in 9th grade by my wrestling coach.
Everyone had a partner to wrestle with practicing different things. Well me and my guy was working on top mount and I was on top keeping him down and stuff. Well my coach was wrestling with this huge football guy who was a heavyweight and my coach was probably 180 or so lbs but cut. Well they get spun into my area and my coach heels me in the butt and ends up bruising my tailbone. I ended up having to sit on a donut, you know those inflatable hemorrhoid pads to keep your butthole nice and comfy. The pain was pretty bad but I was able to finish practice but the ride home sucked as I couldn't sit on it at all and basically had to lean to one side.
It took a week or two before I could sit back comfortably with no tenderness.
