Why do people retire and then come back to the same place to work again? What is the point of retiring?

Most of the time it's bc the company offers them too good of a deal to pass up.

It's a ploy to come back, either as a contractor or employee at a higher rate. My favorite is when they purposely inadequately train their replacements.

You won't believe this but some people really like being vital.
I know, huh?

Because when the retire they get to start collecting pension money. Then they get rehired for a similar income they were making before.

Say you're making $60k and are eligible to retire with a pension that pays $40k. You work out a deal with your boss to hire you back as a consultant for $50k. Now your income is $50k (consultant money) plus $40k (pension money).

Seems pretty logical to me.

One of my ex. coworkers retired and moved a couple of hours away. Then she came back when her replacement turned out not to be worth a damn. She only works 3 days a week and is making no telling how much.

My grandfather did(twice).
Keith Jackson did.
My janitor did. We held a party for him at it seemed like he showed back up the next day.

It's usually boredom or a nagging wife.

Whoa Nellie!

Which one?

The Georgia-born sportscaster or the former Eagles TE?

Some people who work for great companies get to be set for retirement financially at 55 or 60 if they want it. It's not uncommon for guys to retire and then the company hire them back as contractors making insane money to come back to get them through a big project or something. Some people have a very disirable skill set so it works out for both parties.
Plus, the guy probably still gets insurance paid or at a cheap rate being retired and doesn't need pension or 401-k through the contractors, so he can just get paid a bunch more.

The other option for these old guys who know what they are doing is the company might offer them some pretty damn nice stock option or bonus packages if they put off retirement for a year or two.

Most in my business retire at around 55, then come back at $75+ an hour, with no set schedule.....

That's my plan.....

My father in law just retired from a large plant in Baton Rouge(won't say for obvious reasons). He said they offered him his same salary to come back as a contractor. He said he would need x dollars to come back(said it was about 33 percent increase) and they agreed on spot. He is going to have a really good few years from salary and retirement.
