Is anyone else running into this more and more lately? More and more when I meet people and ask what they do, they say things like "I'm in Oil and Gas" or "I work for an IT company" or some vague nonsense like this.

Why do people give such unhelpful, generic responses? Saying you work in Oil and Gas is as informative as saying you work in Houston. Are you in HR, Accounting, Sales, Engineering? Do people not understand their role or the business model of the company they work for?

I met two girls last night (no pics, nothing special) who worked together. One told me they worked for a staffing company and one told me they worked for an IT security consulting firm. I asked how they worked for the same company when they described two entirely different companies. One said she didn't understand the question lol.

How could they say such dumb shite and not be embarrassed by how ridiculous they sound? I'm noticing this more and more lately.

Because no one wants to sit there and listen to 15 minutes about how somebody compiles TPS reports.

Do you think people care that much what you do? Do you think people want you to explain to them in detail what they do?

Whenever I explain my specialty, I only elaborate when I know they share the same specialty. I even kind of generalize that in simpler terms too.

I think what people think I do is boring so I get it out the way real quick!

There is an easy solution to your dilemma...
Example #1
You, "what do you do for a living?"
Said person, "I work in oil and gas"
You, "what exactly do you do in oil and gas?"

Example #2
You, "what do you do for a living?"
Said person, "I work for an IT department"
You, "what exactly do you do at the IT department?"

It's called carrying on a conversation!

How about... I'm an Electrical Engineer in the Oil & Gas Industry... ?

Any more detail than that and it'll be a waste of my time since you won't know WTF I'm talking about.

I say I'm an attorney.

I then say what general area I practice in.

I'm doing you a favor leaving out the rest.

I imagine it is the same with others.

Oh, you want the details of what somebody does at work? Really? If so, then simply ask exactly what it is they do and quit being a uppity prick

Who gives a shite about that minutia.

I sell construction equipment parts, that ain't enough for you?

Takes too long to explain what I do to anyone not in the industry, it's ultimately not interesting whatsoever, and what I do for a living doesn't define me.

I never understood conversations that start between people asking about what they did for work

Why would you give a shite what random people do for a living anyway? I walk away from people who ask me inane questions.

I will sometimes give a somewhat vague answer if I don't want to engage.

What I do is very particular and is not worth the fifteen minutes it would take to explain.

Plus, most people want to talk about themselves, so I just listen.
