Why not clean it up and keep using it because fema isn't going to pay for any of it? I've seen stainless pots/pans, cast iron cookware,120 qt crawfish pot, wrought iron patio furniture, plastic gas cans, bbq pits, f350 rims and tires.

Because they don't know any better probably.

Pulling out pots and pans that had nasty poop brown water with mold standing in them for a couple days really makes me want to eat out of them

You can't clean a crawfish pot.

I never clean mine either. Just spray that bitch out and throw it in the shed.

Sounds like you should collect all this and resell them.
Profit for you

I think at some point they just give up and would rather start over. I was helping a friend clean up his place and he was throwing out all sorts of salvageable stuff because he was overwhelmed with it all. I kept most of it to clean up and return to him later once he gets settled.

If you've ever been flooded...trust me, your not in the mood to keep possessions that went under water. You feel like your home was robbed and everything raped, for lack of a better term
Besides, it's a good time to clean house and get rid of shite you didn't want anyway.
And maybe they had insurance......don't play the FEMA card on everybody

Maybe it's just a result of the consumerist culture we now live in. A hundred years ago, lots of the stuff dumped would have been salvaged. I've seen things on the news coverage that I've had the same thoughts about. Probably even some of the wood furniture, etc would have been saved years ago.
I have a huge cypress armoire from the early 1800s that was made by my 5-great grandfather. I know it's been through a house fire (just had smoke damage), probably got some flood damage either in the '27 flood or some other time. If people had no way of replacing it like they can today (just a quick trip to Target and a few hundred bucks!) they might've tossed it years ago.

I was hoping the crawfish pot was still there when I drove back by. 1 hour later and it was gone.

Flood insurance doesn't pay for everything, for instance they say they won't pay for countertops. I'm not sure if that means they don't pay for ANY or will just cover laminate. We saved what we could at my mother's house, including those faux marble bath countertops. I've seen people throwing out granite.

I understand that it seems gross but we throw raw meat and other stuff in them that is just as bad or worse without thinking twice.

I don't understand it either. I saved most of my things and cleaned the hell out of them. I am shocked by the things I've seen on the side of the road.

FEMA administers the national flood insurance program and they are not going to pay policyholders for stuff that can be cleaned and reused, even if they have contents coverage.
