I believe selfishness is an aspect of seeing suicide as a rational thing to do because people (and I deal with depression myself) that get into these deep and dark emotional states get there by focusing so greatly on their on problems, issues, that they never look around and see how everyone struggles with life and goes through down times. Its the egocentric view that i believe contributes greatly to depression, but many people are almost incapable of looking around seeing in the big picture that things arent that bad, and in fact they are fortunate to be where they are at.

No, what you had was a case of, "I'm sad..."
ETA: Or you could have experienced a depressive episode, but it certainly wasn't on the severe end of the spectrum. I know it may be hard for you to believe, but there is a depression that can't be exercised away.

How very sad and tragic. I can only imagine what his family is going through and it must be very difficult to have to mourn a loved one with the whole world watching you. God will take this family through their grief, but what a hard road it will be.
I have a copy of Rick's book(Purpose Driven Life) it was actually given to me by someone who felt like I needed The Lord in my life and was a catalyst for me coming to my faith.
