Yeah, you've definitely heard of him before --> " Obama, McCain Talk Issues at Pastor's Forum" (CNN, August 17, 2008)

I guess, vaguely. I'm not up on my evangelical pastors.

And yeah, I've never understood the contempt for suicide victims either. Someone was sad enough to kill themselves and that pisses people off?

Maybe you had some mild or situational type depression that you were able to shake with exercise

But he could've had clinical major depression that needed meds. I wonder if he took any. Or he could've been bipolar. I didn't read the article

I had clinical. I took paxil for a year. Forgot about that.

Paxil sucked. It was enough to make me work through the issues that made me depressed in the hopes that, one day, I too would again have an erection.

Ugh. I hate when people who commit suicide are referred to as selfish

Isn't that the OT way

I don't get how life can be that bad.

They really don't

I guess I only really feel the compassion I do now for suicide victims since my uncle killed himself. I did a lot of reading trying to understand

re: Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide
So it was situational. The Paxil helped you get through the situation until things got better

Some people are not helped by SSRIs. Some people have refractory depression that isn't so easily treated

Trout, you are lucky then to not have ever suffered from severe depression

re: Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide
I believe selfishness is an aspect of seeing suicide as a rational thing to do because people (and I deal with depression myself) that get into these deep and dark emotional states get there by focusing so greatly on their on problems, issues, that they never look around and see how everyone struggles with life and goes through down times. Its the egocentric view that i believe contributes greatly to depression, but many people are almost incapable of looking around seeing in the big picture that things arent that bad, and in fact they are fortunate to be where they are at.

re: Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide
People sound uneducated when they use a cliche like people that commit suicide are selfish.

The person committing suicide is usually so depressed they see suicide as "doing the world a favor". In their frame of mind, they are being complete "selfless".

I don't know I just think I always have a positive outlook and can't comprehend life ever being that bad to end it.

Depression? I've had that. I just worked out/ran more.

No, what you had was a case of, "I'm sad..."

ETA: Or you could have experienced a depressive episode, but it certainly wasn't on the severe end of the spectrum. I know it may be hard for you to believe, but there is a depression that can't be exercised away.

So, just because you can't comprehend something, that makes you an expert on the subject?

re: Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide
How very sad and tragic. I can only imagine what his family is going through and it must be very difficult to have to mourn a loved one with the whole world watching you. God will take this family through their grief, but what a hard road it will be.

I have a copy of Rick's book(Purpose Driven Life) it was actually given to me by someone who felt like I needed The Lord in my life and was a catalyst for me coming to my faith.
