Paper, Rock, Scissors - Strategy & Tips

I would say I'm an expert level thrower of paper, rock, scissors. I have some thoughts I'd like to share and discuss.

Statistically, if you were to always throw the same (ie scissors), rather than picking at random, you would have a 50% chance of winning. You'd beat paper, and lose to rock (scissor is a tie, in which case you re-throw -- we'll leave these out since ties are neutral and you are only concerned with wins/losses). So if you're playing an opponent with a truly random choice, choosing the same throw each time provides the best result.

From my experience in the real world, though, paper is thrown the least, at least initially. This means that your best chance of winning is to throw rock on the first throw every time. Scissor is most commonly thrown among novice players because it's the most recognizable symbol. Rock beats this.
First throw: rock.

I've also found that people usually counter your first throw. If you throw rock initially, your opponent will generally throw paper, in which case you should throw a scissor to counter.
Second throw: scissor.

If the numbers worked out for you, you would have already won, if by chance that hasn't worked for you, the remaining strategy should be considered random and you should continue to throw scissor until the game is complete. The chances of paper being thrown by your opponent increase exponentially as the game goes on due to its lack of appearance earlier in the game. People think they're bringing out a secret weapon by throwing paper on third and subsequent matches.
Third and all other throws: scissor.

Most importantly, you place your fist in your palm three times, then match. Most people like to match on the third time, but this is improper form. Use this to your advantage. If they reveal what they are throwing by matching early, they will usually not throw that again. This makes it impossible for you to lose by choosing something that will beat/tie their remaining choices.

Just go with rock all the time...

ETA: Nobody does paper. Everybody goes for scissors. Just go with rock. Worst case scenario you have to go again. Just do rock again on the redo, they will go with scissors.

What's your win percentage like by throwing paper on the first draw?

An old HS friend was really good at PRS. He had a strategy that basically involved saying any word that shared the same first letter as the PRS option he wanted his opponent to "shoot". For instance, if he wanted his opponent to shoot scissors, he would say a word that started with the letter S right before they would shoot. This technique got him to the PRS national championship i think. There was something on ESPN about it a few years back.

I'm calling bull shite on your friend's story.

I'm throwing rock every time, and I'm telling you I'm going to do it, and I'm still going to win.

Come at me.

Seems like cheating to me, once the countdown has started there should be silence.

According to two of the above posters who often choose paper, you'd lose.

What's interesting is if I combine their initial strategy of opening with paper and your repeated throwing of rock, it would be a perfect counter for my strategy in the OP....

My three favorite strategies for RPS:

The Accountant: Paper, Paper, Paper - No one ever throws paper and rock is widely believed to be the best. play against the feeble mind of your opponent.

The Excalibur - Rock, Scissors, Rock (aka, the sword in the stone) - Play the power in both forms with this combination, your opponent will never see it coming.

The Rockslide - Rock, Rock, Rock - Rock is the heavy favorite againse players too masculine to throw paper. A wise man once said, "Rock beats everything. You hold a piece of paper against your face and ill throw a rock at it, then you let me know who you think wins."

Yeah, if there is any truth at all to his friend's story then they must have been playing prison rules.

In high school my lab partner and I PRSed over an undesirable task with a dissection. He kept pushing for three out of five, four out of seven etc. I won eleven times in a row. We were pretty good friends at the time, but not afterwards. I think I freaked him out quite a bit.

I understand that Scissors can beat Paper, and I get how Rock can beat Scissors, but there's no way Paper can beat Rock. Is Paper supposed to magically wrap around Rock leaving it immobile? If so, why can't paper do this to scissors? Screw scissors, why can't paper do this to people? Why aren't sheets of college ruled notebook paper constantly suffocating students as they attempt to take notes in class? I'll tell you why, because paper can't beat anybody, a rock would tear that crap up in two seconds. When I play rock/ paper/ scissors, I always choose rock. Then when somebody claims to have beaten me with their paper I can punch them in the face with my ready made fist and say, oh, I'm sorry, I thought paper would protect you.
