Paging Napoleon - Washing machine outer tub rim/edge sheared off (with pics)

5 year old Kenmore, top load, high efficiency washing machine.
Last night I was washing a few items, and two small pillows. Shortly after the spin cycle started, all kinds of racket ensued. I paused the machine, and opened it up to find this. It came off in a single piece. It had partially wedged itself between the outer tub and wall of the washer. The rim had been getting rough/jagged over time.
Any idea what could be the root cause of this problem? I priced out an outer tub at around $150. Is this an easy thing to replace? And should I look for other problem areas that could be causing this to happen in the first place?
Here is the piece that came off.
The rough/jagged area in the upper portion of this photo is where the piece came off.

I'd say it's just a little bit more efficient than you need.

Im not a repair man, but you definitely shouldn't have had a pen in there. lucky the top didn't come off.

I have never seen that before.
Could have been off balance really bad. I would replace the suspension rods/supports if replacing the outer tub.
It's not a really easy job, but there are videos out there that can walk you through it.
If your washer makes a freight train noise in spin cycle then I would look to replace the bearing as well. Most likely this is all the result of being badly off balanced and the new springs will fix the issue there and the new tub will fix the tub failure.
You may not have to even replace the tub, the issue may just be cosmetic.

Napoleon you are a good guy. I appreciate the fact that you offer advice on topics you have knowledge of.
You helped me and others I am sure, without actually knowing it.
Thank you.
