re: Ovarian cancer patient seeks use of experimental pharmaceutical drug, but denied

A "magic pill" or cure will not be found for all cancer. It is a very big money maker!

This. You feel for the woman, and we all know someone dying or who has died from cancer. That being said, even if she did take the pill, it would be a .000001 percent to change she'd live anyways.

"Healthy volunteers", does not apply to cancer drugs because most are cytotoxic

Thus the

I was sort of trying to explain the process of trials past the theme of cancer, but I guess it's not necessarily relevant in this case.

Right, because all cancer is different. Not because

It is a very big money maker!

Because that pill would be worth tons of money. Even more than the ones that don't work all that well.

Yep. If someone is dying, and there is an experimental drug on the shelf that might give her a chance at survival, they should give it to her.

The problem is that it isn't on the shelf. It's been given to animals. And 30 different humans have tried it, basically to test the side effect profile. It's very conceivable that there is absolutely zero of it 'just lying around.' They're in an extreme pre-production phase of development of the drug.

The truth is, cancer sucks. The company is not at fault here, though. There are other PARP inhibitors in the pipeline; some with better data and specifically designated against ovarian cancer. Drugs, like anything other purchased good, are a consumer product. One question I always ask of my students when I'm teaching the Oncology module is - if I discover the cure for your particular cancer...does that entitle you to the use of my drug? Think about that and the current situation with the ACA (please don't move to PT ).

I figured if I quit posting, I'd quit reading and spend more time studying. I wound up reading just about as much anyway. So here I am.

I never could keep my mouth shut...

Great question. The altruistic side of most of us that get into medicine would say 'yes,' but then, a much smaller subset of us, look to see where the cost to cover the drug comes from.

Did you ever happen to read/skim The $800 Million Pill? Production and research of medicine is unsustainable without someone paying for it. Hell, vaccines would (nearly) cease to be made if they weren't so heavily subsidized.

ETA: Or even better than where the cost coverage comes from, what makes person entitled to buy a certain product from a private seller?

No need to read. I've done research at/with St. Jude, Eli Lilly, and I am a fixture on both prostate and breast cancer experimental therapeutics sections for the CDMRP (DoD).

Nice resume. A pharmacology PhD and drug design/research was in the back of my mind when I was applying to med school.

I'm technically a medicinal chemist, but half of that is pharmacology, especially in oncology and infectious diseases; achieve the kill/therapeutic level, maintain, discontinue, evaluate, repeat if necessary.
