So say my kid wanted to go out of state and it was like 40k a year but in stated was like 20k.

Why wouldn't I just buy like a 15-20k shack or trailer in some bum f town in said state and pay in state and save myself like 80k?

Are there any rules preventing something like this?

Yep. Lots of rules to prevent that.

How about rent a UPS box instead of buying a uni-bomber cabin?

Most universities have a requirement for declaring yourself in state. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe LSU was that you had to have a permanent address in Louisiana for a year before attending the school. Are they going to check? Probably not. But there are rules for it.

Yes. Most states have strict residency requirements to qualify for in-state tuition. You usually have to provide evidence of primary residence and have to have established residency for a certain amount of time.

It used to be a lot more feasible. Now there are a bunch of boxes to check. I know for Auburn, your kid essentially needs to go live there and work full time for a year, or something akin to that.

They are pretty thorough. Even though I had lived in Louisiana for several years and graduated high school in LA, I was consider out of state because my father being in the military was a TN resident.

LSU waived out of state for dependants of the military. Every semester I had to go the hassle of getting a bunch of forms filled out.

No, you're welcome to do that but the residency (for LSU students) will need to be verifiable (bills, etc) for one year. After the first year the kid is a resident based on LSU's requirements. Doesn't matter if it's a shack or a McMansion.

Are you serious?

You think the college doesn't know where he went to High School? Do you think that every out of state freshman living off campus at LSU is paying in-state tuition?

LSU will waive it if you pitch a big enough fit, and have supporting data, got it waived for pointing out that there are five contributing(not really,) LSU grads in my immediate family

He's serious and it doesn't matter where the kid went to high school. It matters where residency has been established based on the institution's guidelines.

LSU Residency Guidelines

It's not very hard to make this happen.

I tried but I went to high school out of state so it didn't work. I grew up in New Orleans then moved to Houston. Tried using my grandparents address since my dad pays for it but it didn't fly.

I lived in Louisiana for a year and changed my residency then got it.

Wouldn't joining the national guard in Louisiana, even as an out of state resident, would entitle a student to free in-state tuition?
