Other than Katrina, have you lived through other devastating natural disasters?

If so, which one(s), and how did it affect you directly?

There should be several responses since natural disasters aren't that uncommon

Rita, Gustav. Didn't even have to leave the state to live through 3 in 5 years.

Every other hurricane that came through here, although I'll admit my closest brush was with Katrina.

I get hit by a little hurricane (Irene) in New Jersey - actually a TS by landfall, but they thought it was a big deal.

I also got hit by earthquakes in California and also in New Jersey (which was just a few days before Hurricane Irene).

Tornadoes have hit near me, but not affected me directly.

But not all are on the level of Katrina or Camille - I'm talking disasters where towns are displaced, hundreds if not thousands are left homeless, etc

While not as devastating as Katrina (can't imagine what some of you went through), Hurricane Hugo fricked my shite up in 1989.

Cat 4 storm and my house was almost completely destroyed. We had a 14 foot storm surge which washed away or soiled almost every house with a mile of mine.

No power for almost 30 days, remember my dad boiling water on the grill (staying at a friends house), letting it cool, then putting it in the tub so I could take a bath (4 years old).

That was a great week. Between that and the bomb threat we had maybe 2 or 3 days of class for the first 2 weeks.

We didn't even lose power

Probably the closest would be the tornado outbreak here in Alabama back in April 2011.

LINK

Thankfully my town was not hit but while it was going on we walked outside and you could see debris (mostly chunks of insulation) flying by overhead. We found all sorts of debris from places as far away as Tuscaloosa, Concorde, and Hueytown all over our town afterwards despite being as much as almost 100 miles from where the debris was from. In my yard we found pages from a bible, a cell phone bill to a business in Tuscaloosa. My neighbor found a child's shoe in their yard.

I was in Tuscaloosa a couple weeks before for A Day when a big tornado came through (obviously smaller than this one) and it passed about a half-mile away from the apartment I was in. It's a pretty crazy sight to see.

4/27/11...I worked in Tuscaloosa at Bruno's. The tornado crossed less than 1/10 of a mile away. I saw it heading into town and was able to get in my truck and across to the damaged area before they shut down the road. Everyone was crying not knowing if their families were safe. Nothing you could say to comfort that fear. Everyone minus the store manager made it through in a meat cooler. The store manager dove for cover when the windows blew in.
