My dachshund is 17 (not the one in my avatar). I've had her for 15 years. She's been an amazing little companion. I couldn't have asked for a better pup.

But she's clearly in her last months. Her hearing is all but gone, she has trouble sometimes keeping food and water down, she shakes a good bit at times, and is becoming frail. She has good days and bad days.

I obviously don't want her to suffer, but I want to keep her as long as possible.

The last time we went to the vet, he told me to start preparing (been several months).

When and what things convinced you it was time to have them put to sleep? Do you feel like you waited to long or maybe could have saited longer?

Thanks

Mine was my 13 year old dachshund. But she had no mobility by that point, and we couldn't control her sugars anymore, so it had to be done. I'm sorry, man. That sucks. You already know the answer.

It sucks for you but it's worse for them. Cruel to let them suffer when they served their master loyally. When you know it's only prolonging their pain, time to dig the grave.

Possible, with a good taxidermist.

I kid, in all seriousness, it's a hard decision, but from the sound of it she's had a long and fun life. If it makes you emotional thinking about her suffering, it's probably best to end it.

Hell I think we should celebrate 17 years. It's not going to get easier so do what's right when you think it's time. Before its time, cook her a ribeye.

We had to put down our dachshund of 17 years earlier this year. It started with small stuff, like not wanting to eat or losing control of bodily functions. Then it got to the point where he was having seizures. We brought him to the vet, and they told us there was nothing they could do and we may need to put him down. We wanted a second opinion, but not 10 seconds after getting in the car to leave the vet, he had another seizure.

17 years is a long time. I loved that dog to death, and had it through most of my formative years. At the end of the day, it was all about not letting him suffer any more.

Whatever your decision, good luck and sorry you're in this situation. They're definitely good and loyal dogs...

17 is a long time for a dog.

I'm no vet but you would probably be doing the dog a favor by putting it down.

wow, 17 years...that's great.

Sounds like it had a wondefrul long life.

I've done it twice and it's extremely hard. But feel good knowing your dog lived that long and had a great run

Watch

This^^^ then decide if it's the right time.

Also
THE LAST BATTLE

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

When I could tell she had a poor quality of life, I cried like a baby.

Look, when the only time they get up is to painfully walk out to use the bathroom, it's time.

When they lose the will to eat, its time to say goodbye.
Sorry you are dealing with this. Tough to let go of such a good pet, especially when you are with them everyday cause you may not notice the changes that others would. I didn't realize how far my bloodhound had slipped cause I saw him everyday. Good luck.

I had to put down my 12 year old Dalmatian. is hips were so bad he could barely get up. He still had a good sparkle of life in his eyes but it was my duty to see that he didn't suffer.

I had him put down and he died in my arms. Felt him take his last breath. I had him cremated and spread and took his remains on a fishing trip and spread his ashes at our favorite fishing hole.

My old Jack Russell could no longer walk without stumbling. She fell off the couch once and just laid there on her back for a good few seconds. Like a broken horse.

I decided that day and started making calls.

I bought her a whataburger junior and fed her the whole damned meat patty while I ate the fries and squalled. That too helped the decision. She was so frail she damn near puked the meat patty up. It was time.

when my lab couldn't get up on his own at 15, that was it.

Most vets make the process very smooth though and they do not suffer one bit so take comfort in that.

still sucks

My dachshund stopped eating and drinking. If they're rejecting food and water then it's time imo, respectfully.

always tough man. I grew up with two min pins. the oldest was my partner in crime, slept in my bed, everything. Left for freshman year, and when i came back, I could tell it was time. Dug her a grave and cried like a bitch when she died.

weird how i can be so attached to a dog like that but if a hog dog get seriously injured there is no second thought about putting it down in the most humane way possible.

I know 17 years is a very long lifespan for a dog. And I've been grateful to have her around as long as I have.

She sleeps very well, and still has a good appetite. She moves slow, but the tail still wags.

I have loved spoiling her for 15 years and she will definitely get a great farewell meal.

Thanks for all of the replies.
