Not an OT baller so I am looking at getting a used Omega Seamaster 42mm. I've heard the gray market "new" watches on Amazon and others are a risky buy (not sure if that's true either).

Any tips on what to look for in auctions or description? Any reputable sites?

I bought a used watch from watchuseek forums. Did my research on the seller and used PayPal with buyer protection. I've also bought and sold bike equipment upwards of 1k on classified forums. Just pay the 2-3% PayPal fee for protection and file a claim if they send you something not as advertised. Never pay with a money order or PayPal "gift". I put an ad with a picture of exactly what I wanted. After two obvious scammed attempted to sell me something, I found a great deal from a legit seller and had my watch soon after.

I've bought and sold a lot of watches on the Watchuseek forum. All have been positive experiences. A lot of Seamasters come through there from both used watch dealers and individual owners. Just check the feedback forum for feedback on the seller.

Just saw a commercial for Crown and Caliber. No idea if that is any good.

Crown & Caliber is legit. I have bought and returned a watch from there with absolutely no problems. Their site is one of the most user-friendly out. It's easy to look through hundreds of pre-owned watches.

Same here.

I Love the early Omega Seamasters. I picked an early 60's Seamaster 600 at an auction in Denham Springs for $35.

Although it took $250 to get it up and running and back to its original state.

-Avoid ebay
-as mentioned: get watchrecon. It's the "google" of watch classifieds.
-search for the specific model you want or browse by brand.
-buy the seller not the watch. I've sold Omega and Rolex watches on Watchuseek and Rolexforums and only have a handful of posts, which is something to be skeptical of. But I am happy to provide references and use my personal email so I can be found on linkedin/facebook/etc.
-(that said, try to buy from someone with a shite load of posts or at least has been a member for years.)
-Use watchrecon for a few weeks to establish normal prices for the model. Don't be shy to negotiate - people low-ball the hell out of me when I post a watch for sale.

I ran the sales corner on Watchuseek for many many years. Here is something I wrote back in 2009 and it should help you:

How to AVOID SCAMS

AS A BUYER
· Ask for clear pictures with a specific time or object included.
· Ask for the sellers address. Check www.anywho.com to find out if they live where they say they live.
· Get their home phone number. Use www.anywho.com and do a reverse lookup to see if the phone is registered in their name.
· Call them and talk to them about the watch.
· Don’t get too excited if you see a great watch at a ridiculously cheap price. It may be a scam.
· Be vigilant with new members.
· I recommend paying with PayPal using a credit card. It provides an extra layer of protection. NEVER use "gift"
· Only use bank wire or certified check if you completely trust the seller. Even then, it is a risk.
· Be specific about which shipping method will be used and ask for the tracking number.
· Don’t ask for the seller to do anything illegal (i.e. reduce value for customs reasons)
· Google the member’s username and real name online. See what comes up.
· Pay for insurance on every watch.
· New sellers should comply with all reasonable requests from you (pictures, phone call, etc). If they don’t, walk away. If you don’t feel comfortable about something, walk away.

AS A SELLER
· Ask for references.
· Check those references. They will give you their best references. Make an inquiry post asking about them.
· If they give you their EBay username as a reference, contact them through the EBay system and ask them if they are the same person.
· Check the forums to see what prior deals have looked like for your buyer.
· Google the username and email address of the buyer. See what comes up.
· Accept whatever payment you are comfortable with
· Know all shipping rules if you are shipping internationally.
· Ask the buyer for their home phone number and call and talk to them. Use www.anywho.com and do a reverse lookup to see if the phone is registered in their name.
· Check www.anywho.com to find out if they live where they say they live.
· Don’t reduce the value on an international shipment. It may cause you problems at some point. It also may cost you money.
· Ship the item using a method that allows for insurance, tracking and signature delivery confirmation.
· Be vigilant with new users.
· If you ever feel uncomfortable, walk away.

Glad you're here. I started a thread a few weeks ago but it was late on a friday so I got no answers.

I'm a watch novice but jsut purchased my second one recently. The box came with one of these thigns

is this necessary? Neither watch is fancy, one is a seiko with a metal band (the more "formal" of the 2 I suppose) and the other a Bulova with a leather strap.

For the leather strap one I just take it off and set it on the table when I get home, should I be using this holder thing?

These are showroom displays. They can be thrown away really. There is no reason to ever keep a watch on them.

good deal, thanks for the info. I didn't know if for leather bands that was to help keep them longer or something.

To make your leather band last longer put on a deployant clasp.
