I'm getting old, turning 50 (soon) and wife is getting me a watch. She told me to pick out what I want.

I like clean, classic style, silver with black or blue face.

A guy at work says go with Rolex because they are impressive. I feel like Nicholas Cage in "Gone in 60 Seconds"...

"This Farrari here, I saw three of them in front of Star Bucks today,...Now if I drove a [such a such] Farrari, I wouldn't be a weenie..."

I am not buying a watch because it excites douchebags with no taste.

I am not against buying a used watch.

What y'all say?

Best is a subjective.

Find one that sings to you and buy it.

Omega Seamaster SM 300.

Omega Planet Ocean. (Comes in 42mm or 45mm, older ones were very black with an aluminum bezel, new ones are ceramic and kind of gray colored, pic below)

Rolex Explorer I (In 2009 it was upgraded from 36 to 39mm - take your pick)

I say dont waste $ on a fn watch. And, if youre 50, have the balls to tell her what you want instead of her dolling you.

Might be a touch more, but a manual Speedmaster 42 is the way I'd go.

Two 25-30 year-old females (high end) in Vegas and spend your own $300 on a Seiko Kenetic.

Every time you look at the watch you can think of them and thank me.

When anyone asks you for the time, you can smile.

Breitling is your best bet. Impeccable quality thats known by watch people. Would stay away from rolex, Omega is a great option as well.

Speedmaster is nearly a perfect watch. The only time I feel safe complimenting someone's watch is when it's a speedmaster. You can't say "hey nice Rolex" without the person thinking they're about to get robbed.

Time zone watch forums. The Sales Zone is for under 5k and the TZ Showcase is over 5k.

If you find one you want check out the seller on the watchnet .com goodguys forum.

You can get a nice pre-owned Rolex Submariner for that money. Either the no-date 14060M or the 16610.

Nice piece but way too common, as is the PO. If that is of no concern then by all means.

Why a dude would spend more than $100 on a watch is mind boggling.

Last time I talked to someone about their Rolex they told me it was a 'kinetic'. I laughed and said it was nice. I wanted to tell them it was called an automatic, but it would have been lost on them anyway.
